If you are a big anime or manga junkie, than more than likely you love video games as well. However, despite the enormous fan base in manga and anime only the cream of the crop get their own video game. The anime video game is a rare thing to see, unless you’re talking about the big two; Dragonball Z, and Naruto. Dragonball Z hasn’t been on the air since 1997(not including DBZ Kai) and has a major video game release almost every year and has had 13 titles on major consoles in the 2000’s. Naruto is a the most popular manga/anime in the world (whether you agree with that or not you know it to be true) so it has a major demand for video game releases every year. Now no matter how timeless and nostalgic DBZ is it’s still producing the same game every year with only minor tweaks, and Naruto let’s face it they are absolutely great but, even though DBZ does sell it doesn’t sell as well as it used to. So the Naruto Video Games need a new rival. That’s where this game Bleach Soul Resurreccion(BSR) comes in. I think this good chance for another popular anime, Bleach, to come in and really put on a show.
The Story of BSR follows Ichigo Kurosaki from the Hueco Mundo Arc through the Fake Karakura Town Arc and ultimately leads up to the final confrontation with Sosuke Aizen. Now since this starts and stops at the most recent arcs that happened the buyer is expected to know what happened in the previous episodes to truly follow what’s going on. So if you’re a Bleach fanatic this will be great for, and for everyone else I suggest you at least read the manga quick and catch up, because this is a great game whether you like anime or not.
The typical anime video game is a straight up fighter no ifs, ands, or buts about it, that’s how they’ve always been. Until BSR came along and changed that stereotype dramatically. The game play is similar to that of Dynasty Warriors, a war-based progression game where you advance from area to area with a character and gain experience points to level up your character. The more you play the stronger they get. You’ll fight Arrancar, Hollows, Soul Reapers, and plenty of boss battles against other characters from the show. With 21 playable characters you’ll need plenty of time to level up them all.
Now what’s a video games without sound. BSR allows you to change the voices of the characters so you can listen in the originally Japanese voices or the English dub starring the Red Power Ranger himself Johnny Yong Bosch as Ichigo Kurosaki (easily one of my favorite voice actors in anime). However, a big downer is the lack of a soundtrack from the show. Instead has a less than memorable soundtrack you here throughout the game, but a catchy intro video.
Every video game has to bring something extra to the table when being released, especially a new video game series, BSR does just that with Mission Mode, and Soul Attack. Both are modes that gives your copy of BSR a longer self life. They are a series of missions that give you random tasks and enemies to complete with various conditions, and reward you with experience points for completing them making it quick, easy, and fun way to level up your characters.
BSR is a great game that follows the epic and exciting adventure of Ichigo Kurosaki and company, with some of the most addictive game play, perfect voice acting, and really allows you to get you moneys worth with plenty to accomplish. Now unfortunately for you XBOX 360 owners this is a Playstation 3 exclusive. But if it’s anything like Naruto Ultimate Ninja Strom the sequel with will be in such high demand for selling so well you’ll get the next one. So as you can see I’m quite confident this is a great game and worth the time, money, and effort. But can it take the crown from DBZ and Naruto? You’ll have to decide for yourself.
