How did Hashirama control tailed beasts?
it's been said that The first was able to completely control tailed beasts and in fact was the one who shared it among the various villages. Now we know a powerful sharingan can control a tailed beast(we can also safely assume that the rinnegan can too), but then how could Hashirama Senju do it? Was it with sheer will or strength or were they like his personal summonings and as such had made contracts with them? If he could completely control the 9 tails, why did he did Mito Uzumaki as a vessel?
Also how did he lose control of the beast to Madara in their battle and had to take back control of it and seal it in his wife? I think if Naruto could learn of his secret to dominating the 9tails it would help him a lot.

from what i understand it was the 1st chakara that
controlled them. it wsa said that he controled
them like pets not just controled them. but when
he was fighting madara. madara had control of him
with his sharingun the 9 tails had no control of
himself so mito sealed him in herself

The shodai hokage was able to control the tailed
beast by using his bloodline limit: wood element.
Yamato was able to control naruto's
transformation by using the necklace of the first
hokage together with his implanted DNA. though
yamato said that his use of the implanted DNA by
orochimaru cannot be compared to what the First
Hokage can do, which meanus during the fight
between madara and hashirama, he has still the
possession of the necklace together with the 100%
ability to use the wood element to subjugate the
tailed beast. you also know that the sharingan can
control the tailed beasts too, but the
First's kekkai genkai is much more powerful
than the sharingan itself. i hope i was able to

for the follow up question, even though hashirama
can control the tailed beast, it cannot sustain it
for a long time without a vessel, meaning it needs
to be sealed in order to prevent it for rampaging,
that's why he sealed in Mito who has a
powerful chakra due to her clan
