View Full Version : Changing File Formats {OGM-Avi}
I was wondering if this could be done without the use of some application, and if so how would I do that?
and If I were to use an application to do this, which one and how?

WITH: I have this thing called handbreak... It may only be for mac though.....
WITHOUT Application: I suppose you could change the file name to .avi if you wanted, thats what I do with mkv and it ask me if I want to change it to .avi, once again this may only be on a mac.

Changing the attachment to .avi from something else is a common command, though I think you can only do it with players that are divx/windows media player interchangable. Thing is, that CCCP codec pack, what would that do? I'm downloading some .ogm files now (Saiyuki, for those playing the home game) to test it out. Will I need the VLC Media player and CCCP codec pack to play these as they're being downloaded before I change them to .avi?
Yeah, getting them from the mIRC channel right?
Yeah, I got one from there also, the downloads are pretty good, but they take so long to start since there's loads of people wanting something from the same bot, right?
So, yeah like you can like change it by changing the end of the file to .avi
I know how to do this but then sometimes it says that it might make the file unusable or something.
But then if I change it would the file size go down or something?

No. It cannot be done without an encoding application. OGM/MKV is a Container that allows use of Dual Audio/Video and the use of soft subs(subtitles that can be turned on or off. It's mostly used by DVD rip groups who want to Have Japanese/english audio and Have use of their own subs and the comanys subs that made the DVD. AVI is a video file format made originally by Microsoft to view video online. OGM/MKV still has an AVI File inside the container. So you cannot just rename the file to whatever you want, bC its a video file.

What he said. I dont remember how, but there are programs to extract the avis from ogm and mkv containers. Like i said b4 go to www.videohelp.com for anything you need in encoding

other than to seperate the subs from the video, what's the point? If you're after a raw so that you can make AMVs from it, then I understand, but why else?

See, there's been a big hubbub in the fansub community about a not-so-new format for the videos. It's like, h264 or something like that. Basically, it'll provide the same quality of a .avi file without the huge size. Problem is, though, you need a pretty good computer to see it at its best, which is apparently something like a high-definition t.v. I got pulled into it when Lunar Anime, subbers of Bleach, announced that they eventually would use this format only. Now, I don't know if my comp can handle it or not, but I'm sure I won't be seeeing anything at its best. It's a hp pavilion 7965 with an Intel Premium 4. Because of this, I'll have to learn how to erase all codecs on my computer, and install a new video player as well as familiarize myself with a whole new set of video formats, which is going to take alot of time. So, I wanna know how to convert things to .avi.

Dont worry to much about that dude. H.264 is really a fad right now. I just recently started to encode for a group(which we will be promoting very soon :]) and I did 2 encodes. 1 encoded with xvid and the other X.264. The quality is not that much of a difference. The real benifit of using the x.264 codec is to keep the quality of a 160mb+ file size at around 75-100mb. After playing with different filters, Xvid to me was the winner. It did ot cause conflict nor crash my PC. VS when I did the x,264 it caused a few crashes with my encoding software, but overall the file size was 90 mb but (to me) looked exactly the same as my Xvid version. The codec(x.264) is playable on the average pc. So dont worry about that.
Oh and stripping a MKV/OGM file is kind of a taboo around the anime communtiy. Unless used for making AMV's. BUt still looked down upon.
Hey, my encodes are like that too, like if I were to take an average .avi Naruto file, encode it, I'd make it between 90-95mb, with basically the same quality.
ALso, how do you make a computer process faster?
Intel Penium 4, as stated above processes at around 3 Ghz, while my AMD Sempron 3100+, processes at 1.81Ghz
And also takes forever to load stuff, I have no clue why either, so can you tell me how to make my computer process faster?
PS: NOT looking to overclock
Oh, and also, say I were to have the .ogm files..
Is there a way to srhink there size to make them fit onto a DVD?
Click Here (http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=268844) This will explain in detail how to convert between file Containers.
