I think as musicians, they were ok, not brilliant, but not terrible. I was never really a big fan. I believe it was the contraversy over whether he killed himself or his wife did that made them as famous as they are today. I really should listen to more, because I like a few of their songs, but don't own any. I should work on that.

']I think as musicians, they were ok, not brilliant, but not terrible. I was never really a big fan. I believe it was the contraversy over whether he killed himself or his wife did that made them as famous as they are today.
Nah. There's two different kinds of fans, the ones who heard about that whole suicide/murder thing and then there's the ones who heard a song and were hooked.
As a musician I think the music is brilliant. The solid hushed strength of the drums and bass is incredible, and enables the solo guitar to do just about anything. Kurt's vocals are great with a voice that's "both tortured and angelic in equal measures". You can hear how he sometimes sings right from his stomach, right from the source of his pain, and other times how he just enjoys the music and it totally comfortable in(while playing) a good song. It's awesome. The lyrics are so powerfull.
'] I really should listen to more, because I like a few of their songs, but don't own any. I should work on that. Yes. Yes you should.:)
Some people, like me, can find the music overwhelming. Other's just enjoy it cause it's good stuff, just like they enjoy any other good band. Both are great
Rape Meeeeeh Rape Meeeeeeh (not to be taken literaly) to bad he killed him self. Love those songs ---> Lithium and Smells Like Teen Spirit Yeah, awesome stuff. If you liked lithium, you should listen to "Dumb". Both are good songs.
Smells like teen spirit was that classical one hit single that just happens every now and then. Easy good lyrics, solid music and one of those awesome but still easy as pie solo's.
I am listening to Nirvana - Rape right now. I like a few of there songs, but I haven't heared enough to be a fan though
You should go buy a CD. They're like 10 bucks in shops.
Or just.. "get" one. =]
whoa!verm posted more then 1 word.....Applause my friend.Anyway i like Nirvana. They are the group that got me hooked to rock. But what was Kurt Thinking. I have watched tons of stuff concerning the Suicide, And never understood the real reason of why he did it.He had everything,But i guess when you are not happy with yourself, or everyhthing is coming so fast, you tend to lose yourself and......Ahh. wish he was still here. Good music like that is rarely found.Maybe that crazy woman of his Courtney love drove him there.....lol who knows.IS the album thats out now the same from back then or is new Material?

I have to post something serious atleast once a month, or they won't let me admin this place..
Kurt felt like shit. Now add a few days on a detox program in LA, and there you go.
His suicide made the music he'd created alot more special though.

I agree totally with Vermilion. They are a great band, I have every CD they made, even the new one that came out a few years ago with his previously unreleased single "You know your right", which I think is one of their best songs.
Another reason why he killed him, adding on to what verm said, he didnt like all the attention that came when you get famous. He hated all the reporters and cameras always surrounding him everywhere he went. That was and still is a stupid reason to put a shotgun to your head and pull the trigger, but to him I guess it was all the reasons he needed to do it. If he had never killed himself then I do believe Nirvana would still be around making some killer music to this day.
Thanks for the info guys. But is the new album the same material or is it Like new and Unreleased stuff?

The only new(previously unreleased) song is "you know your right". Awesome song.
I went out n bought the new CD just the other week, and it's awesome.

I'm a big Nirvana fan, which is probably an understatement. Ever since I've heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on MTV the teen/grunge lifestyle has been a part of me. What those three brought to mainstream could not have been stopped by anyone, they even de-throned the king of pop michael jackson. Listening to Aneurysm right now...
Ugh, i just realized the whole murder/suicide thing has been brought up in this thread. The reason why I think he was murdered is because, unlike a lot of ignorant stupid assholes, I decided to actually read about the investigation done by detective/private investigator Tom Grant. He was hired by Courtney to find Kurt after he skipped the wall of the rehab center in Marina del Rey, California. When Kurt's body was found in the greenhouse on April 8th, the events around his death and circumstances led Grant to believe that "this whole thing stunk to high heaven." I could keep going, but i really wanna play tetris right about now.

I wish I was a little older during the early 90s. Although I was able to watch their careers unfold in real-time, I honestly cannot even remember when I learned of Kurt's death. When it happened I was only 9 years old so I was too young to have heard it and understood on the news.
I use the internet sharing program Kazaa and I share all my Nirvana stuff, I got a bunch of concerts and performances, as well as interviews. Just search through videos for nirvana and find one being shared by the user "4_Users", which will be me. I always share.

Ofourse not, I actually handed over legal tender in return for a circular disc that plays music for all their albums. I wanted their music to be the best quality it could be, and frankly downloading them is hit or miss, most of the time its miss.
Umm.......**Nods head** I did that to.
Normally i'd say your nuts but since we are talking about Nirvanna i guess spending a few bucks is worth it.

Typical response from your type. And by your type I mean the kind that craves attention so they find some type of group to clash with so they feel like they're getting the attention they deserve. That comment about becoming alive when kurt died proves my point that you say idiotic things that aren't true for attention. I mean seriously, on April 8th 1994 did you all of a sudden "feel alive". No you didn't, that comment was just stupid. You threw that in there just be contradictory and "shocking" to the rest of us.
So...instead of getting angry and whatnot about your comments, I'll simply state why I feel they were a great band. First of all, the lyrics and vocals by Kurt came from real, raw emotions. It wasn't fake 'glam rock' or like the groups who sing about dark, depressing things just to be different or exotic.
Secondly, their music is so perfect for most teenagers. And by that I mean the middle-class, down-trodden, blue-collar, hard-working, depressed, emotional teens of our society. Think of it this way, when 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' hit the U.S., all hell broke loose. Michael Jackson dropped off the charts, hair bands disappeared, and suddenly all these grunge bands came out of the woodwork. And why did this happen? Because we finally had music we could really connect with. There was no fake pyro, on-stage acrobatics, make-up glam rock bullshit.
It was real. 'Teen Spirit' was just that. Kurt always avoided talking/singing about sex and drug use, there was no need. Unlike most groups today there were no "bangin bitches" and "smokin blunts" horseshit. I can only think of two songs of theirs that contained "swear words". He was able stress his words and emotions without the use of all that crap. Kurt's voice wasn't that great...so what? You can't hear or feel the emotion eminating from his voice, that's too bad. Are they over-hyped by many? Of course they are, but so isn't everyone else. But unlike Nirvana, 90% of the others are "flavors of the year". Some others who were "big", New Kids, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Jewel, Spice Girls... they all hit big, but they disappeared. Just like 50 Cent, Usher, and all the current top stars will. Nirvana are still being enjoyed 10 years later by millions of people.
I think that's enough, you can continue to hate them, whatever. Goodnight.

I am not a big fan but still listen to their music, not in CD, just over the radio.

Also unlike many other bands, most of the songs he wrote, the lyrics were either based on events that happened to him in his life, an example is one of my favorite songs "Silver", that was based on his childhood. Most of the other songs were either based on something he experienced in his life, or were feelings he really had. Thats why they are a great band, they arent fake.
BTW, does anyone know where i can download the entire MTV Unplugged session with him on it, i saw it a few years ago and i'd like to watch it again. I cant remember what song it was but at the end of one of them he grins, i love that grin he gives cause...have you ever heard of the term shit eating grin, well thats exactly how he looked when he grinned, but whats ironic about that grin is, its one of the only times he ever grins on camera. Oh yea That show aired only a month or two before he died.

It was at the end of the first song "About a Girl". The producers of the show told him to smile more so he gave this forced smile for the camera.

yo, Nirvana is definantly one of my top five favorite bands, probably #2. I love the bass lines on some of the songs, like Polly and You know you're right. I was quite surprised that the famous Smells like Teen Spirit is such an easy song to jam to! Holy Cow, I just couldn't believe such a hit was so friggin easy to play!!!!
Shiva (my band) did lots of Nirvana covers, me of course being the bass player. ;)
Did you know that most of my family on my dad's side has meet atleast one of the band members?
Yeah, my dad's side of the family lives in Aberdeen and I go there alot during the summer. I usually don't like to tell about stuff like that, I dunno, just kinda wiggy about telling strangers that I've had the pleasure of meeting Krist Novoselic, if you don't know who that is, he's the bass player of Nirvana. Retired, nice wife.....doing okay. The Drummer, Dave Grohl is in a band called the Foo Fighters right now, if you've ever heard of them. It was a very thrilling expirence that I've had the chance to shake Novoselic's hand, a damn good bassist, I tell ya.
Actually, when I think about it, I was just living a few blocks from them when they were just starting out, I think just when Bleach came out. Holy crap, Who would've thought that a great ledgendary band would come out of a small logging town of Aberdeen?
Now, Kurt Cobain, I haven't the pleasure of meeting him, sadly.....but he was a good man, of what I've heard from my family. I don't know if I'm allowed to say why kurt Cobain did what he did......>_> don't wanna get in trouble....
I would like to say though, that I greatly respect Nirvana and its band members for making the most kick ass music of their time, Nirvana will forever be remembered by the people.
Oh, if you don't believe me, thats okay, I don't blame you....There are all kinds of freaks out there saying that they knew Kurt Cobain personally to get attention. I've meet a few myself, most of them....... were so wasted drugs, it wasn't cool....Don't do drugs kids, they're bad, m'kay.

Depending on what you mean by good. I personally love it because I like actual music. Most of the 3 cd set is comprised of home recordings, or non-studio recordings. Therefore, the quality of the audio is not "CD quality" but I still enjoy the actual music itself. I never thought I would hear an acoustic version of "Lithium" until I got it. This version is only 2 minutes long but all the songs are like that. By that I don't mean shorter track lengths, just different from what we usually hear. I mean Serve the Servants is like 11 minutes long. There's about 3 different versions of a few songs on there, like an acoustic 'Rape Me' and 'You Know You're Right'.
None of the songs in the set are like the studio recordings we're used to hearing. The closet one is the Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", which could pass as the Nevermind released version to the untrained ear. To me it sounds more raw, and not as polished as the Nevermind version.
The fourth disc in the set is a DVD containing footage of them performing at a house party back in like '89, Krist's house, studios and a few other spots. I hear people bitch about the first scene because Kurt is literally singing into the wall, but I think he was positioned that way so it would sound better in the room, for acoustics.
If you enjoy music and can look past things like shaky audio quality, then I think you will enjoy the Nirvana Box Set 'With the Lights Out'.
