I was wondering what you people out there think about space explorations...if it is worth the cost...
i mean...i do think it's worth it ..because..if you think how people are buying nice clothes, video games, etc it's a waste of money . And then of exploring our space..you atually...learn new things...rather..than atually playing new video games..and making yourself look good..what do you guys thinks?

Okay well...the gov't is wasting its money on stupid wars instead of science.... i think if it spent more money on space exploration we would have our solar system covered inside out... but anyways NASA is going to release some very interesting mechanisms into outerspace..search NASA...but the gov't funding can really help... as we all know knowledge is bliss... the more we know about the vast universe the better..metaphysics all the way!

I think it is very much worth it. We should start looking for a planet that resembles our own (meaning that it has brethable air, an about the same temperature, etc.) seeing as though we are f!@# up this planet with Co2. There are things we can do to save the planet but people dont give a schite and their not gonna do anything about it, if our own president doesnt give a schite I doubt the people will.

yeah.....it is a very big risk..if you send human out to space..the space ship might be un sucessful too..(exploding) ..and also we..havn't discovered much of earth..like our oceans..etc....but in my opinion ...exploring space is a yes.

Wow I looked at a couple of answers and people are responding with some very ignorant answers. One said "they should do more ocean explorations" they dont know that it would be ten time easier to build a base on Mars than build one at the bottom of th ocean.

Yeah its called a mars rover, they use it to take pictures of mars and explore the terrain. But the martian climate is kinda harsh so they dont know how much longer its going to last, apparently its way passed its "expiration date" LoL. Theres a lot of info here.

...these inventions latley ...are amazing..i mean a robot that can go to mars and take pictures..
i also read on someone's awnser from yahoo..that some of our teqnology.. was from space program
The people that ask this question are sitting at their computers, watching television, talking on their cell phones, and enjoying their extended lifespans, as compared to 50 years ago.
All of these things are a result of the space program. so do the people who...well say "no" to space explration change their mind or still same?

Personally, I find space exploration interesting. I'd like to think that humans have a desire to discover the unknown. And seeing as how huge space is, you never know what's out there. And right now, technology's just beginning. There's so many things, so many possibilities for us. I find it amazing to think about~
Besides, without space exploration, where would we get the satellites that help us keep connected with everyone else? ;D
it's true, we could put more effort into space exploration if we gave up some of lifes little pleasures, but the space program is in no risk of being shut down right now anyway, the space program has plenty of backing, I have no relation to the space program, why should my money go towards something I have very little interest in. I think that space exploration is worth it, and we should continue to explore the universe, but why put more money into it, sure you'd advance it faster, but that can be said for any feild, better that it stays where it's at,

Mostly we go to space for experiment, they test out drugs and other equipement. Yeah its a lot of money, but we gain from it. Kinda like war, without it wed have no reason to advance tech, sounds stupid but true

Personally in my opinion...it's a huge waste of money...mankind hasn't even discovered half of their own planet and they want to go out into a place where they can't survive and at this point in time they know their aren't any options other then mars if this planet decides to crap out...geez the cure to cancer could be at the bottom of the ocean and they want to extract minerals from moon rocks...how clever are they!?
Also in my opinion...when Earth dies...mankind and their big egocentric crown should go with it.

I think it's very much worth it. It's because by the time we have colonies on other planets and could inhabit them, at this rate of global warming and other ways of destroying earth, earth would be uninhabitable by that time. Space exploration is very important because it is another option for the human race and other species on earth to survive if earth was to be destroyed. Also, if space exploration was abandoned, if a meteor was going to hit earth, who is going to warn everyone on earth? We would be sitting duck. The least we could do is prepare for it. The greatest we could do is plant a nuke or a large engine on the meteor and veer it off course. Space exploration is a very valuable asset for earth to survive also. I think more money should be spent on this instead of pointless wars and things. And also, if earth was to go down, what purpose was the work of our ancestors. The blood of our past has toiled in vain for us to live on. How could you say that we should just die out? You realize that human beings have just flourished on their planet and is finally ready to move out into the universe. It might not be much right now but it soon will be. Humans were created to live. And if we have to live, then we will keep on living no matter what happens.

I haven't decided whether or not I agree with how much money is spent on space explorations. I'm leaning towards it's useless, because really most things we've learnt from it have been meaningless and redundant. Wow rocks on the moon, not cheese. Thank you! Though I do know that Americans NASA spent millions upon millions creating a pen that can write in space, where as the russians...used a pencil.
However, I do disagree with saying that video games and nice clothes are a waste of money. Because video games, not only actually cause kids to learn, but also when people buy them provide money for their creators. And whether you like it or not, these people are geniuses, and deserve the credit.
Also, Whether you like it or not, looks and the way you present yourself are very important. So buying nice clothes, though may be totally useless in terms of what they do for you, but other people see them and will think better of you. If you walked into your next classroom, and your teacher was unshaven, unwashed [aka smelly], and was wearing a basketball jersey and nothing underneath, right off the bat, before the class has even started, most would not see this teacher as someone they'd like to be taught under.
It's the same when you see girls wearing nicer clothes. However there are sometimes fine lines between aesthetically pleasing and slutty.

Sorry, Kekkei Genkai...I am a Misanthropist...so I tend to have those viewpoints and opinions.
What I'm saying is mankind isn't even past the point of having conversations beyond "how's the weather?"...what makes you think that they could survive off of the planet...they'd die out fast then the chance of a desert having rain.

I think that there should be more funding for space programs to develop better technology so we can build better aircrafts for space exploration. The universe is infinetely long and we might something out there that could be good for Earth in the long run.

Er, isn't it possible to explore the oceans and junk..and explore outer space? It's not like we've only got one set of scientists to get this stuff done or anything. >.>

You do realize people probably only say "how's the weather?" because they don't feel like talking about anything in-depth with you, right? ; ) What's chit-chatting have to do with space exploration and finding other potential places to live should something happen to the earth?
Like others have already said, of course it's worth the cost. Space exploration has enormous potential for humanity. There's no denying that.

Miburo, actually most people love having in-depth conversations with me due to the fact that I have an opinion on almost every topic imaginable.
What I'm saying is people can't get by a conversation like "hows the weather?" because if they do it almost always ends in a fight...most people aren't ready to accept that other people have opinions of their own.

1. I was joking about the first part.
2. Sweeping generalizations about humanity aside, it has nothing to do with space exploration or the survival of humanity. Unless of course you were implying that should the Earth become inhabitable for whatever reason, everyone deserves to die because they can't "accept that other people have opinions." >.>

Which still doesn't have anything to do with the topic of "Space exploration: Worth the cost?".....
By that logic you're using, nothing is worth doing. Should we try to find a cure for cancer? "Nah, not worth the cost, humanity is weak and they're going to die regardless" See where that is going? Best to quit while you're ahead-ish-notreally. ^^

Dude. What the hell?
I was referring to your answer to the question posed by the OP. I disagreed with it, and debated my points. You originally stated that space exploration isn't worth it because you feel that humanity a) has better things to do and b) should die as a whole along with the planet should the earth become uninhabitable. You then stated in your next post that you are a person who hates or distrusts people and feel that people wouldn't be able to survive off the planet, justifying your statement by pointing out the fact that some people have poor conversational skills.
I countered by saying that a) we can do both the things you suggested and still continue the developement in space exploration and b) pointed out the fact that your justifications for such statements are unwarranted due to faulty reasoning on your part. What aren't you understanding?

Oops...my bad...sorry about that...my mistake...I thought you were missing something. by the way...I don't hate or distrust people...I hate mankind...the word misanthropy gets all confused depending on the dictionary you look in...the oldest term for Misanthropy is "One who hates or distrusts mankind as a whole"

Dude, you remind me of me when I was 11. Or was it 10?
Basically, why are you saying you hate humanity in the topic of space exploration? Its kinda unneeded.
And I think space exploration is fine, they need to do things more quickly though. The hubble is nice and all but it is very old, it needs more new stuff. Besides learning more about the universe is a good thing.

No...what i'm saying is mankind is stupid for not even completing its search on the damn planet...sure putting cameras in space to find any threats is fine, but do they really need to get out their...they always talk about the problems on the planet, but with the space program it's like they turn a blind eye to all the other shit going on in the planet...you can't just brush problems aside and hope everything will work out ok...sometimes you have to look back in order to see forward...I hope you understand that.

titan A.E. anyone? (Animated Movie from a few years back)
It is my opinion that we shoukd colonize space and colonize in a very non-self centered way. We all know what happens when people get corrupted by power and that only means disater in space. So we should settle space as engineers, geologists, and other scientists as a group of team members working for that common cause of the community and not the individual freedoms until we can setup stable civilization and then a government.
Worth it? Yes. I like the Bush idea. Make all our Mars trips from the moon, Colonize the moon first and setup all the neccessary facilities to operate large scale transport. The one thing that I was impressed with by a History channel special was the fact that scientists can now make machines that will convert the mainly co2 to CO (waste) and O2.
There was another idea slurted out: Robotic settlement setup crews. We could send teams of robots to setup the stations and operate the CO2 to O2converters and thus losing the cost of sending wave after wave of humans.

Titan A.E. = good movie
well, most projects start with good intent, until (rich) common folk want to live in space, then real estate agencies and restaraunt/store franchises will want to colonize. then there will be space billboards saying "eat at space McDonalds, where the fries are out of this world!" (bad pun, but i will happen :p).
then there will be international conflicts to see who can colonize what first, for instance like the space race between America and Soviet Union (russia), only on a grander scale with all the countries trying to one-up the other.
Freshgrease

The whole point of space colonization is not to be of several nationalities or getting past the damn legal and polotics. A space community must be unified and be nationless as they have no nation when they are in space.
I can see the corporate jerk offs trying to rip every fat dollar they can, but that dollar only hurts the cause of space colinization. IF anything, commercialization of space should not be allowed until the stable settlement of another world exists in the state our Earth's civilization and access to land is.

If we are able to colonize in space, we'll be able to explore further than ever before and hopefully uncover great msteries of the unknown. But leaving the earth behind will feel pretty wierd.
