But he notices Neji has gone ahead. He goes to catch up with him as he hears,"THIEF".

Sasuke pulls out his shuriken and perfomrs a jutsu. He sends out wires that wrap around the thrieve's feet and he falls to the ground.

Well, you have to remember that the original Naruto has 12 yr olds in it. The Timeskip is when 15 yr olds are introduced. So hopefully with age comes better story.
