Toonami is dead. RIP.
September 20th, 2008 – 6:57 pm
Tagged as: Anime, Industry News
It’s official. Cartoon Network announced today that they are ending their Toonami cartoon block. After tonight, September 20th, 2008, it’s gone. Employees who worked on the block will be going to other parts of the channel. Anime will be mostly handled by Adult Swim (which, as I wrote earlier, is also dying), and there will be another action block replacing Toonami on Friday nights afterwards. Toonami Jetstream will remain without the Toonami name.

This is another sad day for American fans of anime. Toonami was one of the programming blocks that brought decent anime to U.S. airwaves. Now it’s gone, and it looks like anime on Cartoon Network is doomed to extinction.

Started in 1997, Toonami was the first real cable option action anime. It brought us shows like Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, and most importantly, Dragon Ball Z. In its later days, Toonami aired more generic shows like Naruto and One Piece while Adult Swim handled the more “mature” series like Death Note, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, and Blood+. But recently, most anime fans had given up on the block since its selection of shows had been rather…poor. Some stalwart fans still held out hope that the execs at Cartoon Network would bring in exciting new shows again, but it seems like they’ve decided to give up. No word on exactly what shows they plan to replace the Toonami lineup with.

There’s also no official word yet on whether Toonami’s biggest current series, Naruto, will be continued past the remaining episodes they have the broadcast rights to. The show is in the middle of a big set of “filler” episodes, and ratings have apparently tanked. Lots of fans were still looking forward to seeing Naruto: Shippuden air, but there’s no word on whether that will happen now.

Tonight there will be a special on-air announcement for the final airing of the block. Tune in and say goodbye.

i just wanted to hear some more thoughts about it. it played a big part for me when i was younger, i used to watch it religously. but it kinda went downhill recently. and i wonder what will happen to naruto

Toonami got me into anime when I was around 10. This really sucks. I remember the Sailor Moon, DBZ and Gundam Wing block like the back of my hand.

You will be missed.

Bewildered I watched. © 2008 Anonymous

I gazed in awe as the luminescent glow of dusk settled; the sands of time whipped about along the wind. How was I to know what I would feel in those passing moments? Glee? Shock? Rage? Angst?

No.

For the only emotion that welled up inside the calloused cauldron of my soul was a distinct emptiness. Alone I sat in front of the flickering screen as the lights dimmed. The sweet serenade that had ushered me to a fantastical sleep as a child populated by dreams and promises was fading. The voice of my youngest of years whispered so eloquently the long, last goodbye.

“Bang...”

Warmth did touch my eyes and stream down my cheeks. Though I am a man today the child inside wept. There was nothing. There was nothing.

So my childhood ended with one word. The lock that sealed eleven years.

Stay gold....

Indeed sad news...however, after 04 there was a steep and steady decline in the content of anime showed on toonami...

But weep not my friends...us american anime fans can find respite in the wonders of subbed anime.

toonami did open up my horizon in anime back in the days of gold with yu yu hakusho, gundam wing, salor moon, inuyasha, cyborg 009, fullmetal alchemist, some of Hayao Miyazaki's work like My Neighbor Totoro, and others. it was great up until maybe 3 or 4 years ago then i stopped watching because it simply started to suck due to their poor selection of anime like blake mentioned. but yeah the news doesn't shock me one bit either.

If I see some gay ass Total Drama island, Camp Lazzlo, or other retarded CN show...I'm going to scream. They've been going downhill with shows in the last few years. They cater more to little kids now. Let Nick and Disney have their kiddie shows and retarded teen shows. The only TV I watch is Adult Swim, The Colbert Report, and all the Guns & Ammo tv on Wednesdays. Don't take my Adult Swim.

naruto isnt violent enough for adult swim imo. its more of a kid anime. but if adult swim folds there wont be anywhere for naruto unless it gets picked up by 4kids and we dont want that

I haven't seen any of the jap. narutos but I heard that the new series of it has more then enough violence for adult swim. I also cant see adult swim going down. Do you really think they'll be playing little kiddy cartoons all day and all night. (Flap Jack rock though)

This is ridiculous. Why would CN actually do that? Even though the majority of there viewers come from the other cartoons, Toonami has been a CN tradition. Toonami pretty much was the reason I started watching CN. With Pokemon and DBZ. :[

...Well, that just plain sucks. I just hope that Naruto will stay the same without any more violence edited out. If AU got the rights though, maybe it will be in raw format that is dubbed!

Think about this you losers complaining. What if (since all of tv is going digital anyway) they are trying to form a new channel or a few channels specifically for anime like this. What if there are different versions like all of the popular Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach while another channel has the former ones like Full Alchemist and Gundam. You know, just like how Boomerang separated from Cartoonnetwork to alllow space for all of these animes anyway.

There used to be an Anime channel that tried to startup. It was on Sattillite for like a year, then it tried to go to cable. It wasn't allowed on cable, so it pretty much died.

So what keeps it from starting up better this time than it did last year? Once the companies or stations see what a hit these animes would be, they most likely would allow it just for them to get paid major.

Ah, Toonami. Back in the day, I came home everyday afterschool and watched episodes of Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, Hamtaro, Kenshin, all those good shows. This makes me especially sad, but with the lack of good series, I'm not that distraught.

R.I.P. my favorite cartoon channel. D:

Naruto will not be playing on Cartoon Network

At least, not this week Saturday. This Saturday, Total Drama Island will start at 7pm(EST) followed by Spider-man (movie, i guess), followed by a "Special Presentation" of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Then it's onto [adult swim].

Ahh, Toonami. One of the biggest (if not first) things that frequently exposed me to anime. I would feel a bit more sorrow about it closing down... if it wasn't for the fact that I stopped watching about two years ago. Still, it was one of the few areas that wasn't completely infected by Cartoon Network's current retardedness.

I don't really give a shit. It was awesome back in the day, but now the best thing on it was Naruto fillers, and that's a bad thing.

As far as I'm concerned, Toonami died the day they moved it to Saturdays and replaced it with Miguzi on weekdays.

Good riddance.

They curretly went down hill... Cartoonnetwork in general, The only thing they had going was Naruto and maybe another show, no not really. The whole thing with there blocks, didnt help, let alone the names.

As they add more shows, I dont know how they last. They are not good shows, they are stupid in my opinion... The old days on cartoonnetwork were the best, like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, DBZ, FMA and more.

Im not a fan of Toonami, the only reason i dont wan to see it go, is the fact that i dont want to loose Naruto. So basicly I dont know how cartoonnetwork even lasts, with these childish shows, that I dont even know why a child would want to watch.....

I remember my brother and I running home from the bus stop to catch Sailor Moon (that was more my thing, Brother did his homework, but he nicely watched it with me 'cause I asked him to), Gundam Wing (We bought most of that series up, Love it, love it, love it) and DBZ (this was the first one we watched). I wish they would have brought back the good ole days instead of trying to replace it with more faggotry. I saw the last broadcast. I didn't know about ti before hand because I was at my cousin's house. =/ But, Hell, Samarai Jack was one. That show is the shit.
