Okay....so, the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato, shoves the Kyuubi into Naruto when he's right out of the box, saving the village and killing himself, and becomes a legendary hero. But he wants Naruto to grow up being a hero as well. Well...geez dad...how about throwing the kid a bone and giving him your clan name??
I can only imagine that since he used his new-born son a Jinchuuriki, mom must have been dead, or so pissed she took off and left them. If she was happy about it...where is she? Naruto has no memories of his mother, so we have to assume she wasn't in the picture very long. Yet...why does he carry the Uzumaki clan name? Its not like his peers carry their mother's clan name.
Did the remainder of the Namikaze clan reject Naruto? If he was accepted by the Uzumaki's...well...where are they? Or...was he Minato and Kushina's love child, and too scandalous to be accepted?

I have a feeling the elders had something to do with it. Based on what Tsunade explains, the advisers want to keep Naruto isolated and seperated from society. Due to Naruto being a host of the powerful Kyuubi, he is often treated as weapon that is kept from war. I'm sure the elders did not want Naruto, being this feared yet isolated creature, to be known as something that is good in the shinobi world. Minato was the finest shinobi that broke out of Konoha, he was also a great Hokage. I doubt the elders or higher ups would want Naruto getting too famous, being the only child of the 4th Hokage an all. So Naruto upheld Uzumaki, his mother's name.

His mother has been refered to in the past tense so it is a pretty safe bet that she is dead.
Naruto might have been given her name to keep the Fourth's enemies away from him. The Yellow Flash was a very famous and powerful Hokage, you have to assume that if an enemy found out about Naruto that they wouldn't want the Son of the late great walking around and getting powerful himself.

Well first off i dnt think there was such things as the namikaze clan and the uzumaki clan those are simply last names like hatake kakashi or rock lee...

My guess is that Yondaime didn't want Naruto knowing he was his father until he was ready. That's also the reason no one has told Naruto about his father yet. There must be some sort of reason that Naruto doesn't know yet, and I'm sure it will be revealed soon.

Maybe he wanted naruto to be like the boy in Jiraiya's book
So, If naruto knew, he may not have worked hard

I've thought long and hard about it, and this is the best theory I can come up with.
When Minato was a year old, his clan was wiped out. His mother managed to escape with him and bring him to the Tsunade, whom she begged to take care of him. Tsunade never knew who this women was, and she was only told Minato's personal name.
After he became a chuunin, Minato asked the Hokage to allow him to explore his history. He found out that he was part of the Namikaze clan, but no one could tell him how they died. Jarayia advised him to keep his clan's name a secret, lest his parrent's killers come after his loved ones. He only told his closest friends about his clan.
The Uzumake clan was wiped out with the rest of Kishuna's village. She moved to the Leaf Village, where Minato made it his life's ambition to win her heart (annoying her for years to come). After they consimated their not-marrage (Forlong giggles), they decided that Naruto should not be called a member of the Namikaze clan for his own protection.
After Minato died, Kashuna became bitter at the village's treatment of Naruto. When Naruto was two, the Hokage advised her to take a D mission and let the time away clear her head. She did, but came across Orrochimaru and Sasuri. They beat her half to death to get information on the Leaf's jinchuuri (obviously, she didn't crack). She managed to escape, but couldn't make it to the village, so she used a summonning jutsu to send a message to the Hokage.
Anyway, that's my theory.

That's a good point. Minato got the name 'Naruto' from Jiraiya's book and the boy worked hard to get acceptance. That's one of the better guesses i've saw.:)

Not to repeat myself too much from the Danzou thread....but, if Danzou were Naruto's grandfather on his mother's side, he might have had a hand in making sure Naruto had the Uzumake name instead of that peace-loving-3rd-Hokage-influenced-dovish Minato. He is certainly a cold-hearted enough bastard to ignore Naruto for all these years, yet throw money his way to keep him in an apartment.
Uzumake Danzou? Could be....

Maybe Minato didn't know Kushina died. So he figured that Kushina would raise him so Naruto should have her name. But, it turned out that Kushina actually died.
Honestly, I don't give a damn.
It's a dumb question. The reason is that Kishi fucked himself up by giving Minato the Namikaze name.

Oh man...I'm sorry. I missed the part in the forum instructions where we only open threads about stuff you give a damn about. Geez... please accept my apologies as I grovel at your feet.

To protect his identity.
Namikaze was too famous as a shinobi. You know shinobi besides the Akatsuki would come after Naruto since he's Minato offspring.

Clan names are last names.

No, Danzou put his name forth to become the Third Hokage. The Uzumke clan didn't live in the Leaf Village at that time. No way would Naruto want to be rellated to that creep.
Honestly, I don't give a damn.

Sheesh, take your tranquilizer already. If you thought the question was stupid, here's a great idea: IGNOR IT!
