Athiests...quick question...
Not really a debate but this question came to me a few days ago but then I lost the thought and then it hit me again so here it is and I'm interested in these responses
To all athiests- Do you have a soul.... and if so what's it for? |
Re: Athiests...quick question...
I am not an atheist, but I can give you an answer: There is no legitimate, convincing evidence that any living thing has a soul, and no reason to believe that life requires anything like a soul to exist.

HR, what is the definition of soul you are using? There are so many interpretations of the word that I'd like to know which one is being debated.

Re: Athiests...quick question...
I'll echo Numinous: define what you mean by soul and I will answer your question to your satisfaction, but I can give some points:
Do I believe in an afterlife? No. With the biochemical death of my brain I believe my consciousness will disappear. All the definitions of "self" or "spirit" are created by my brain and without it, my "self" will no longer be. Someone who is brain-dead is not the same person and could be considered, if I can assume your definition, soulless. Do I believe anything that is now a part of me survives my death? Well, yeah. We are atoms and energy and both are pretty universal that they will pass to some other form of life or matter and continue in this world as a part of something other than me. I am connected to life in that way so, while the "me" will be gone, what I am will remain, albeit in an unrecognizable. In so far as any of this being defined as my soul, which is generally considered to survive our corporeal bodies, I don't so. So I am generally inclined to not believe in a soul and any evidence to such is merely just the ongoing philosophical debate we have within and between ourselves when it comes to the definition of "self." |

Re: Athiests...quick question...
I have a soul, as long as my conscience exists, I have a soul.

Your conscience or your consciousness?
