He never said he needed the Mangekyou Sharingan to do the Genjutsu. And anyways, you just need to chill.
This chapter was awesome. It shows you that Naruto what Naruto has been haunted by since the incident with Sasuke. I like inner turmoil! It was nice, though unexpected, to see Gaara "appear" in the genjutsu.
