Aang is emotionally mature for his age (from what I've seen). And I don't like their relationship on a sexual level at all, so for me it is not awkward. Aang and Katara just click, imo, and bounce off each other well in conversation. When they are both older, say Katara is 22 and Aang is 20... there is no problem whatsoever with the age difference. I guess that's how I look at it.
