i believe tagalog, as well as cebuano, kapampangan, ilokano, ilonggo, etc, are "languages" of the philippines. even wikipedia regards them as languages, not dialects. now, dialects under tagalog are those of batangas, quezon, rizal, and other provincial differences.
i'm keeping up my spanish and french levels. i think i can go to francophone countries or latino americano countries without getting lost. i think i can do daily errands with what i already know of the two languages.
