is a great resource with over 1000 beginner to intermediate audio lessons for free. You get a free 7 day trial to their advanced features such as lesson notes/kana practice and the learning center. After that you can still download the free podcasts (lessons), but you can get the notes/woorkbook pages for $8/month.
With the paid thing you also get the Itunes feed that'll download everything for you including documents. I like this service and have used it off and on for a few years. I just recently started a paid membership.
My university uses http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/4789009637
and the second volume of this series. I have both as well. Its a good book for $40. Starts off with the basics and moves up with vocab, grammar, etc.
The first thing you want to do is learn hiragana and katagana alphabets. I suggest flash cards learning each horizontal line at a time then progress from there. Then go and try the above suggested resources.
