As for your questions, the man
did open his closet, except the story stated that she was hidden well. And, it did say that she was homeless, so she may have been used to these things. Apparently, every morning when the man would leave his house she'd emerge from the closet and do all of her needs.
It was also stated that the man grew suspicious when food started to mysteriously disappear from his home. She had a nice place in the closet, apparently, with a small mattress and good hygiene.
