@ Beikoku: It's crucial, yes, but not for grammar, but for comprehension. There ARE words between which the only difference is a nasalized sound; minimal pairs, they're called. The inability to differentiate a nasalized vowel from a non-nasalized one would be akin to... say... the inability to differentiate the pronunciation between "cat" and "cot" in English.
