Never Coming Back
Sakura never knew that she had the ability to hate so strongly. She had hated Orochimaru, that was certain. She had hated every member of the Akatsuki, and she had especially hated Itachi.
But now, the strongest hate by far that Sakura felt, was hate for the people beyond her window.
The fools. The stupid, cruel, ignorant fools.
What did they think they were doing? They were going on, as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened. As though, two days ago, the world had not come to a crashing halt. But it had. Didn’t they see? Hadn’t their hearts been ripped out of their chests and stomped upon, as Sakura’s had? Did they simply not care?
How could they not care?
He was gone.
Never again would his smile light up the darkest days.
Never again would he put everything he had into bettering the world.
Never again would he laugh, and say, “Don’t worry so much, Sakura-chan, you know I’ll be fine!”
Sakura’s shoulders began to shake. Her stomach heaved with silent sobs, and she cried.
Sakura cried, and cried, and cried, because he was gone, and he was never coming back.
So many times she could have said those three simple words, even if she had denied the feeling for so long. So many times she could have just told him, “I love you.”
So many things that she could have done for him. How many times had she threatened to kill him, called him an idiot, called him a loser?
A sharp, drawn out wail broke the silence as she realized. She had insulted him, hurt him at least as many times as he had awkwardly admired her, and protected her.
She was a monster. They had always called him a monster, because of the creature within him, but they were wrong. They were so wrong. Sakura was the monster.
And with a sudden scream through gritted teeth, a scream of pure pain and despair, Sakura admitted to herself the truth. She was a monster... and so was Sasuke.
Sasuke... Sasuke, the boy she’d been so convinced she was in love with, Sasuke, the boy who could do no wrong, Sasuke, the man who broke her heart, Sasuke, the man who ended the life of the purest soul ever to bless the world with its presence.
No, he was not the monster... The one they had always called a monster, a freak...
He was the only one of them who didn’t deserve that title. He was the only one who had never deserved it.
But he was gone now.
He was gone.
And he wasn’t coming back, no matter what promises he made this time.
Sakura hated herself for, even as she lay there, tangled up in her sheets with arms wrapped around herself, she couldn’t bring herself to hate Sasuke as well. She could hate herself, she could hate the villagers, she could hate the whole goddamn world if she wanted to.
But she couldn’t bring herself to hate Sasuke. Not Sasuke. Not Kakashi.
They were all she had left, really. They were her family, her messed up, twisted family. As much as she wanted to hate Sasuke- she wanted to hate him, she wanted to feel a burning hatred well up within her, she wanted to want his death, but she didn’t. She couldn’t. Never Sasuke. No matter how angry she was, no matter how much she desired to feel that hatred, it just didn't come. At least, not for that beautiful, heartless, raven-haired monster.
A choked sob escaped her lips, even as she caught the lower between her teeth and bit down hard enough to draw the tiniest bit of blood.
As she lay, shivering in a way that had nothing to do with the temperature, Sakura felt that hate, the hate she couldn't feel for Sasuke. She hated them. She hated them for smiling, laughing, carrying on as though it didn't matter that life had no meaning any more.
The world had come crashing down two days ago, because Naruto was dead.
So why was the world still spinning?
Why did life go on all around her?
It didn’t matter. All that mattered was that he was gone. Naruto was gone.
And he was never coming back.
