The way you put it, "American's" indicates that you're identifying the possession of an individual person that is American. Like "I like that American's hat." And to put an apostrophe after the s, "Americans'" would be indicating that you're identifying a possession of a group of Americans.
Apostrophes are almost always used to indicate possession unless it's used in a contraction.
Basically you had it right the first time.
@Trey--Nah... I mean I might take it if my ACT scores are low. But if I completely own the ACTs I don't see why I'd wanna take the SATs, too.
Because most, if not all, colleges take the SAT?
