the british general was bernard montgomery yes,he led the second attack on rommel's africacorps and won. but the first commander of the british troops was general auchinleck.
and don't forget general patton who led the u.s. operation named: torch, which came to cut the supply lines in the back of rommels troops.

but funny story about rommel in africa:
when he shipped over, he had many transporters and smaller vehiveles with him. as he started marching against the british forces, he desguised there vehicles as tanks so the british scouts would report a massive number of enemy tanks closing in on them. these were the so called "rommel-tanks".
and still today, many allied veterans see rommel as a great general, what he obviously was, but unfortunately he was used for the nazi propaganda in WWII.
