seriously, mangakas are always in conflict with themselves on what the fans would think of their characters. if you could remember the case of sensui in yuyuhakusho, that's clear evidence that some mangakas have always wanted to introduce homosexuality in their works but they are unable to do so (most of the time) because of fear of rejection.
