Yeah, it is a chess board.. My wife got that in some African country - Botswana perhaps? It is hand carved with animal scenes around the edges and came with a set of animal pieces (Lion = King, Leopard = Queen, Elephant = Knight, etc). Really quite awesome, but a little confusing if you actually try to play and haven't memorized the pieces. More of a decoration.
