Yeah, I don't necessarily agree with the fireworks either. It isn't a simple explanation, but the point of the article is that these things do happen with a rather strange regularity, and it is only the size that gets people going. I, particularly, enjoy the end of my link which states that the focus is on the mass deaths of ubiquitous animals, which aren't really at risk, while there are so many species which are slowly being driven from the planet (mainly, by us) that people just don't get worked up over.
