I think you don't understand that he doesn't want to be in a larger debt than he already is in. Nobody likes debt, nobody. Though I don't know what an adult life is like yet, I would assume that he could ruin his credit score that way because he'd have to pay other bills along with his student loans which will drain him. No use in trying to change his mind, he already set his goal.
