the fusing theory is applicable think of it this way they eye pattern is just an imprint of the light that is refracted from the eye socket and when the new eyes are put in the residual image from the old user remains and as new light is filtered through them the old pattern from the eyes that lost light impruint their image onto the eye as well.
Just my opinion the sharingan is called the kaledescope eye afterall
