1 month cards aren't sold stand-alone, they're usually a promotional item. Dunno what the deal is with that.
If you look on XBL, they usually have a 1-month for £2 promotion or something when you're on silver, especially around Christmas. You have to use a credit card for that, but you can actually turn off auto-renewal on Xbox.com now so it's not a big deal. Failing that, the first three accounts connected to XBL on a 360 have a free month of gold with them. So, if you don't give a shit about gamerscore or whatever and you haven't used them, you could just make a new account.
