Personally, I hate the translation of shinigami. "Death god Ichigo" sounds lame "Shinigami ichigo", that is cool. "Soul reaper ichigo"..well.. better than death god. Plus, it would confuse people if they put "death god' in the anime, but soul reaper in the manga. On top of that, for non japanese, it would be odd to read bleach and see a guy in a kendoka's get-up called a shinigami, and a GIANT BLUE MOSTER WHO KILLS PEOPLE BY WRITING THEIR NAMES IN A BOOK called shinigami. Soul reaper is an accurate translation.
I also think it might have to do with the way westerners preview god. Most westerners have one god, one lord of death (grim reaper). However, in japanese mythology, there are an infinite amount of shinigami. Death god indicated they are the god of death, not
a god of death, but
the god of death. Soul reaper is far less confusing to te avrage north american.
