I'm starting to think that Tobi was actually meant to be Madara, and due to some reason (editors more than likely), Madara was summoned via edo tensai to give the Kages some air-time, and it has cast Tobi into this unknown vortex.

Tobi was originally meant to be Obito & simply a side villain for Kakashi not the main antagonist. Then some genius thought it would be funny to troll everyone by having Tobi reveal himself to be Madara. The trolling then went one step further when it was revealed that he isn't actually Madara. Now Tobi is simply no one so the troll fest can continue.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mask doesn't get removed until Madara confronts Tobi at this point.

Just so everyone knows. I have a friend in Japan, whose friend has a son whose friends with a kid whose the nephew of Kishi's uncle. And this kid found out through Kishi who Tobi really is. I hate to spoil it, but he's actually.......Ozymandias. He killed to Comedian and plans to bring peace to the world through devastation. Sorry guys, I know this is, what, 15th hand information. But it all makes sense.

@ Vengeance: I don't think Tobi was ever meant to be Obito. Tobi seems to be a walking red herring, so him looking like Obito at the beginning was probably yet another red herring about Tobi's identity.

I'll give Kishi credit where he has, he sure knows how to bait & switch.

I'd have to disagree. I mean Tobi was originally introduced at the end of the rescue Gaara arc? Which was the arc right after Kakashi Gaiden where Obito was first introduced. Tobi was originally portrayed as someone with brain damage claiming to be a good guy. Said brain damage could have been caused by rocks smashing his skull.

I think the idea for Obito's reintroduction was quickly scrapped to prolong the series with the introduction of the concept of Uchiha Madara. I still believe that it was actually Pain or Sasuke & not Tobi who was originally intended to be the final villain. Artist have the right to change their mind & do so all the time. MS didn't become a power of the sharingan until Sasuke's flashback at VOTE. Originally Itachi was using his dojutsu with 3 tomoe sharingan.
