"Gimme Attention, Dammit!"

I posted this on GUA before, but it was dug up there... And now I think it is time I bring this thread to NL.

I'm a member of three rather busy forums... They're fun to just spend a few hours on each day to relax. I've been a smod on two and a mod on the other. Needless to say, I've been around the block when it comes to posts on forums. I've seen it all... From troll threads posting pterodactdel porn (yes, that really happened and it's hysterical) to huge 100 person flame wars to pyramid schemes. I can deal with all of that. It's easy and it doesn't tempt me to get angry... Hell, even common debate threads on hot issues (including the Presidential Candidate threads back in 04 between Bush and Kerry) don't tick me off.

But here's the biggest thing that pisses me off on any of these forums... I cannot STAND the bullshit cries for attention. They vary from normal "I broke my leg today" threads to "Can you believe my cousin Tony is so thick headed!?" ones. Come on, people! Separate real life problems from the forums! Everyone has parents (or friends or significant others or pets or whatever) that do something terrible. You're not alone... Just don't bloody make threads that are for the sole purpose to get people to say how they are sorry for you / to say that you are right / etc.

It's almost like trolling, but just plain pitiful. It isn't even meant for stupid / sick humor for the author. It's pathetic! (I'm willing to bet that about 50% of the time, the entire story is made up... And it's almost 100% of the time that a number of details have been changed.)

Now then... Instead of people just saying "ur right, lol" or "u big meanie, ur just a nazi" or "lol i liek turkee whut do yoo liek to e3t?", how about we actually have an intelligent conversation? Are the purposes for these threads really like what I'm theorizing or perhaps there is another reason?

ah very true. but that was irrelevant if someone was going to say something about, isnt it? It was bound to happen, theres no escaping that one in order to make a thread telling people to shut it about it.

i think its better if DA just shut up about it, nobody's making him read the threads. If you hate them that much, dont click or read them, let alone post in them

Exactly. Theres alot of shit on here that I dont like, but do you see me making threads "I dont like such and such"?

Although I do read the first post of those threads just so I can point out to them just how big of an attention whore they are.

Now see, here's the difference... I'm not trying to draw attention to MYSELF. I don't WANT people in here to say, "Yeah I agree" or "No, you stupid." I actually DO want a discussion on this topic. Hell, if you think I'm really just pulling shit, then I'll move this thread to Debate.

If you go onto GUA, you'd find (or possibly wouldn't, now that it is in the Warnings forum from flames) that I created this same thread (about 99% word for word) back in 2005. You're most recent thread just is an example of what I'm talking about.
