Luffy is actually a badass. It's more apparent in the manga, where everything is less colorful / less fruity lookin.

Yeah it starts of kiddie looking like that but it progressively turns into the image of Whitebeard covered in battle scars with half his face missing. The latest arc has been like this 24/7.
