Question obesity

Okay, obesity is a huge problem in America and growing into a global one. but, is it laziness or a more common mix of bad genes. Me personally am a product of one famliy know for weight problems and one middle range 'fat' famliy. I'm skinnier than most my famly members (other than my bro0. What do you think?

Re: obesity

Laziness by far. If you are fat then go run and if you don't want to then you are lazy. It is as simple as that.

Re: obesity

Alot has to do with laziness/food intake. I was born underweight and before I was introduced to tv at 6 or 7, I was skinnier than those of my same age. I remember that I would sit there and eat and watch Nickelodeon all day. I just grew and grew. I got made fun of and used food as a recreation...it made it worse.

I am cautious what I eat and do and I workout, but it is so hard to lose the 150lbs I want to get down 160lbs I want to be at. My family is stocky, but not fat. I am not that fat compared to people of my same weight, but that matters not. It was my laziness and stupidity as a child that has made me suffer.

I do think, though, that slow metabolism is genetic. There is a clear difference between me and my friends who eat a ton of crap and don't work out remaining thin.

Re: obesity

Sometimes it's not just a case of being lazy. Sometimes people have emotional issues, and they feel eating alot of food somehow temporarily makes them feel better.

Re: obesity

Metabolisms are genetic, but it is nto as if you can't avoid being overweight with a slow metabolism. Over weightness is due to lack of care or a personal decision. Yes, some people have bigger bones and cannot avoid it, but for the most part it is just laziness.

That said, I am overweight. I am lazy and I like eating. I like food. But, yeah, I too used to eat out of boredom. I need to loose weight (I figure I must be at 250 by now) and want to get down to 160-`80. I am 6 foot, so that would be the ideal weight.

Re: obesity

I'd like to challenge the "Obesity problem" descriptions. The numbers that the media gets for when a person is labeled as obese is based on the archaic body mass index system. This measures height and weight and creates a number that it compares to a chart.

As the Wikipedia article explains, it only measures NET weight and doesn't take into account a number of factors. Additionally, when a person is labeled as overweight to the lower ends of obese, that does not necessarily mean unhealthy. In fact, two people that are the same height and weight may not be equally healthy or capable. I'm a fairly tall and skinny guy, but I've been outrun by people who would easily be considered obese. Etc.

I was going to bring that up, but you don't have to go by BMI. I mean, if some one is fat, call them overweight. If some one is FUCKING fat, call them obese. BMI does not take into account muscle mass, bone mass and others so most people have stopped using that. Everyone I know just goes by what is obvious.

I wouldn't think so. Men are usually taller and have more muscle.

The obesity problem, I think, is mostly related to a combination of lazyness and xbox hueg portions. I got a small soda at Wendy's the other day, and I thought the thing was fucking huge. People just need to eat a little less and exercise a little more. That's the key to losing weight. That's what I did, and I lost 20 pounds.

Technology, you'd say, is a big factor with obesity?

Common fucking sense. Just decide for yourself if you are fat, or fucking huge.

Also, this is no longer a debate, but rather a discussion.

Re: obesity

So I guess everyone is on the side where they are to blame for their own fatness? *sigh* I am NOT to blame. XD I have the worst genes in the world. Although most of them are, there are a group of people who just can't process food fast.

Re: obesity

Might I pop into this lil chat? I myself weigh 125-135 depending on what time of the moth ist is- no joke.... girls- youll understand that... <.<. Any way- im horribel with eating! theres a saying 'do you eat to live or live to eat?'. I myself eat to live- but i eat the wrong foods. im a junkfoodaholic! but i think im a fairly active girl [when im not on the computer...] and im 5 feet 8 inches. [last i checked.....]. So explain that? i was actuly told my my doctor ti GAIN weight o.o. not to mention people in my family are naturaly big... and i mean BIG. my brother is 6 feet 7 inches tall, a wide [shoulder wise] as a house and as strong as a bull! my dads kinnda round- but trust me you wouldnt wanna get in a fight with him either- all he would have to do it sit on you. Any way- my point is that fat/big people and skinny people are both caused by genes and activity. Ask lea- my friends tell me to eat more- im just not a hungry person! neither is my father and hes big- my mom? eh- shes an eater like my brother.... might have to do with us bein gitalian. WHo knows?

Re: obesity

Females usually have a higher fat percentage than a male of the same weight.

And for wrestling they check body fat percentages using the skin fold test. Like others said, the height/weight ratio thing is pretty flawed. In actuality, the skin fold test isn't entirely accurate either due to the human error potential involved. In our state if you want to challenge the skin fold test results they send you to a university where they submerge you in a tank of water to get your body fat percentage, which has always obtained universally similar results. Skin fold tests are much to random, imo.

And yeah, the majority of people could easily lose weight if they really put effort into it. It's very rarely some medical condition or crap like that. That doesn't mean that some people don't have a much harder time losing weight than others, if a guy is fat he isn't automatically a lazy pile in comparison to someone that is skinny.

Re: obesity

As H_I said, maybe people are just like that. ((jenny-sama, you do need to go get fat))

And Miburo, it seems that there is no compeletly accuate test, is there? Then who's to draw the line? That water test looks really promising though. Maybe we'll have them in the future instead of scales.
