Learn pronunciation, hiragana and katakana first and thoroughly before
attempting kanji. Learn basic expressions, and when you have time, learn
about the grammar, and kanji.
It's the order you learn Japanese in nursery anyway.

Re: Starting Japanese

genkijapan.net

for the very beggining i found this website helpful for getting down the basics and memorizations of a few of the basic words and learning hirigana and katakana. it uses alot of interactive games so anyone who learns best that way might want to check it out. though the only problem is it dosnt exactly help you past learning the basics after that you need to find other means of learning.

Re: Starting Japanese

http://www.japanesepod101.com is a great resource with over 1000 beginner to intermediate audio lessons for free. You get a free 7 day trial to their advanced features such as lesson notes/kana practice and the learning center. After that you can still download the free podcasts (lessons), but you can get the notes/woorkbook pages for $8/month.

With the paid thing you also get the Itunes feed that'll download everything for you including documents. I like this service and have used it off and on for a few years. I just recently started a paid membership.

My university uses http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/4789009637 and the second volume of this series. I have both as well. Its a good book for $40. Starts off with the basics and moves up with vocab, grammar, etc.

The first thing you want to do is learn hiragana and katagana alphabets. I suggest flash cards learning each horizontal line at a time then progress from there. Then go and try the above suggested resources.
