The cross is just a broken bar of metal from that broken concrete wall, it caught my attention and disappointed me earlier as well. I don't think that's them personally but it might be a specific incident that Nagato witnessed - maybe his family being killed?

Thats not them.. thats showing yahiko's flashback on war and death. And thats not a cross.. its a building thats been blown up and thats the rods that hold the structure together. Its going around the whole building.

Here is my prediction. I think this should prove interesting.

Naruto is laying there with a concerned look on his face.
Pain: "This battle is over. Its time to go."
Naruto: "You say you want to bring peace but what about the rest of akatsuki?"
Pain: "What about them?"
Pain looks at naruto with a nervous glance on his face. The image of sasori dragging away the corpse of garaa is shown.
Naruto: "You claim this weapon will bring peace but this has never been about peace.
The image of kakazu fighting naruto in long range mode is shown.
"Its always been about power."
Pain: "Power is irrelevent."
Naruto: "Power is everything. It is power that you craved when you sought the bijuu. It is power you have sought to avenge the destruction of your village. It is power which you use even now to destroy this village just to get to me."
Pain: "What does this have to do with the other members of akatsuki?"
Naruto: "Do you think they have the desire for power in order to seek peace? Look at each of their pasts. Do you really think any of them desire peace?"
Pain: "I...Uh...Thats irrelevent."
Naruto: "You can't answer that question now can you? You don't know if you can trust any of them with this power."
Pain: "Enough! Its time we left. This battle is over. Time to surrender naruto."
Naruto: "You are right. This battle is over."
Naruto smiles as he notices a familiar face in the distance.
Garaa: "Sand burial!"
The sand rushes around deva pain enclosing him in sand. Garaa walks over and pulls the blade from naruto's hands.
Garaa: "Are you ok naruto?"
Naruto gets up and dusts himself off.
Naruto: "Thanks but what are you doing here?"
Garaa: "I will tell you about that later."
Pain has a shocked look on his face as he stares at Garaa. Garaa looks back at pain with an angry face.
Pain: "You are supposed to be dead. No one has survived the extraction of a bijuu."
Garaa: "I had some help in that department. Unlike me however you will not survive what is about to happen to you. Desert funeral!"
Pain starts to sink below the ground a little bit at a time.
Pain: "Even if you destroy this body there are still plenty of others. This battle isnt over.
Naruto looks down at pain and smiles.
Naruto: "We will face them when the time comes."
Pains hand reaches out of the sand to grab naruto but only grabs air. Pain sink beneath the sand and vanishes completely. Naruto turns to look up at garaa who has a concerned expression on his face.
Naruto: "We have to find as soon as possible the one who was controlling that pain."
Garaa: "We have a more important issue to discuss. A ruling council meeting has been called of all hokages and kazekages concerning akatsuki and a former friend of yours, sasuke."
Naruto: "What does sasuke have to do with akatsuki?"
Garaa: "He has become a member of akatsuki."
Naruto: "What?!"
Naruto has a very nervous expression on his face as the image of sasuke is shown.

Seeing Gaara would be nice but I doubt it'll be happening. I wonder how strong he is after the bijuu extraction. I'm sure he's still pretty strong, but I'd love to see him in battle later. But this battle is Naruto's, sadly. And I don't think Naruto is in trouble at all for Gaara to make a very Vegeta-like entrance only to get his ass handed back to him. Besides.. if Shinra Tensei fired 3 giant frogs miles away, I'm pretty positive it can blow away sand. :X
