I think there's one big piece missing from the Uchiha puzzle.

What is the Uchiha clan's secret ancient purpose?

We know that Sasuke went and read about this "secret purpose":

Now I know that some of you may argue that this "secret purpose" just refers to the way you obtain the Mangekyou Sharingan, etc, etc.
However, I think there's more to it than this because Itachi would not have cared to tell Sasuke to go to the Uchiha's secret meeting place if he already told Sasuke that you have to kill the one closest to you to gain the MS.

Sure, the "secret" could have to do with the fact that you go blind if you use the MS:

I personally think that this "secret purpose" has more to do with controlling the Kyuubi with MS and this four-eyed monster: http://www.onemanga.com/Naruto/386/09/

So, I guess, my question is: what is this "purpose" that Itachi kept referring to?

No offense, that's not a "purpose" for the clan's Sharingan to serve.
What Itachi said was something along the lines of: "what *purpose* the doujutsu of the clan originally served"

I think that this may go back to how the Sharingan came into existence itself and what that four-eyed monster has to do with it.

Yeah but the fusing MS eyes with brothers MS eyes wasn't made apparent after the time-skip when Madara confronted Sasuke. The book just mentioned how to obtain MS.
