Your question assumes that at some point it was a good form of discipline. You need to clarify, what do you mean to ask? What do you mean by "good?"

"Is spanking a viable/acceptable form of discipline?"
"Was spanking ever a viable/acceptable form of discipline?"

I thinking spanking has its place, so long as the child understands why they are being spanked. Spanking your child and saying they're not supposed to do something "because I said so" or giving no reason at all isn't discipline, it's abuse.

I agree, but when does age play in?

Pain can produce obedience, but it also produces anger [even if it's explained. I know I reached a certain age and I nearly punched my mum once because she beat the snot out of me once. Whether I deserved it or not was inconsequential]. Children will reach and age where discipline needs to move away from spanking to something that's more than skin deep. What they're being disciplined for, too, is changing, therefore the punishment needs to change. I'm a firm believe in disciplining without spanking if you can avoid it, but some children have phases and I'm under the impression is has a purpose.

For me it was a good form of discipline based on my own personal experience, hence my question. For me the deal is using it early, like 4-5 years of age. I just don't believe in that psychology or timeout shit. That's my personal opinion though. Others work and others don't.

I posted this question because it seems that there are too many spoiled kids out there. I think they haven't been touch in their entire life and it kinda hurts me to see parents being treated like equals by their kids.

And for parents who want to be "bestfriends" to their kids... Sorry that's not a good idea, maintain your authority.

There are more effective ways to discipline your children because spanking wont really make them afraid from doing what's wrong again since they will probably forget the pain if they was really young,Beside physical discipline methods has proven that they turn your children into a pussies if they are able to be turned into ones.

So for me i think spanking is wrong because there is more effective methods for disciplining your children that wont fuck them psychologically.

But that age thing is srs bsnss. You have to sensitive to the child's personal development. Up to about age 6 children absorb information at startling speeds, so if you insist on spanking them, between 2-6 I'd say would be the most proper, seeing as they're developing enough to understand the reasoning and at a good age to start instilling your authority as a caretaker.
