Re: The Worst Combination
Charity is a venereal disease. Its primary stage is called virtue; its secondary stage, boredom; its tertiary stage, syphilis.

Re: The Worst Combination

Now, Mark is damn good friends with Jesus, so he thinks this could be interesting. He invites them in and after talking for a short while, they offer to leave the Book of Mormon for Mark to read through. Saying they'll be back in a week or two to discuss things further, they leave. Mark reads through it, and awaits their return. When they come back, Mark invites them in, they sit down at his kitchen table and the Mormons ask him "So, did you get a chance to read through our book?" "I sure did, but I took out everything I disagreed with," says Mark, as he throws the empty husk of the book on the table, having left nothing but the front and back covers. HXC Mormon RAEG ensues. |

Re: The Worst Combination
Let me just say that as long as Christians admit the absolute lunacy that their religion is in regards to rationality, I have absolutely no problem with them. Once they admit that there really is no universal argument for religion, I simply don't care any more. At that point, not to offend anyone, it is like trying to tell an autistic kid to stop trying to organize his toys when he should be doing something else. The same goes for altruism or anything else of that sort.
But when you get like this: Quote:
Let's break this down. Azumi wants us to sacrifice ourselves, everything about us including or enjoyment, for the sake of people. Not just any people, but people who really won't help us back. Even if they would help us back, we shouldn't accept it either because that would be thinking in our interests. If the said poor man pulled out a gun and tried to rob us afterward, well the ideal is to take up the cross and take the bullet. Anyone who would do that is a lunatic, crazy-ass, solipsist who questions whether pain or pleasure exist. Then she goes on to say, "If I were him . . . " as if the morality of Jesus was one where you take his ethics in different contexts. The irony is, that is the exact opposite. Divine commandments are to be obeyed always regardless of your interests, and that it because any divine work is to be done solely in the interest of the divine being. God should be the highest interest in your heart, not yourself. Then she clings to the age-old idea that one's guilt is lasts for a lifetime. Of course, in the context of Christianity she would be correct. However, how does one "fix his life" when he has sinned but once? How does it take any longer with more sins than it does with one sin? And of course, you are born from sin anyways so fixing your scum-ridden, dust-of-the-earth self is impossible. That is true, unless, you sell your soul to the loving God who provides a way out from the hell, which you just-so-happened to be in because of your Greatx1,000,000 Grandfather. He went to Hell because he disobeyed the God who put a tree that could be used only for evil, in the garden. But, of course, that tree was put in the garden so that humans would have . . . free will. Of course life isn't all about material things, but you'd be a liar to say that material value doesn't exist. Also, a lot of material value stems from spiritual (and by spiritual I mean it in the non-religious term) value. Money in its physical form has material value. That material value comes from the material value that it took to create that object. That material value stems from a man who created the ideas. All of these creators of value were driven by their spirit, the spiritual value. Oh, and you would be right in saying you cannot bring material value to your death. What you didn't mention is that fact that once you are dead value doesn't exist because you don't exist (at least in a living state) anymore. You can say, "Well, I don't believe that!" However, you're just digging your own grave (CWUTIDIDTHER). Quote:

Re: The Worst Combination
I agree with RNB's statement in response to the second dumbshit mudhutter quote completely. Well said.
However, I still fail to see how straight-up altruism, or selflessness, is illogical though. And I'm half-decent at logic shit. Like, if some dude was like "Yo, I don't believe in evolution lololol" I'd say he's being illogical. But if some dude is like "Yo, I try to do selfless shit whenever I get the chance" I can't see how I could say "ha, you're stupid!" Even though I'd probably want to, because I'm a dick like that. Now, if we're just saying that the ethical theory of moral altruism isn't the most rational moral theory or whatever, then okay. I would go with that. Because I can't think of any logically correct argument to support the claim that we all should live for the sake of others. So if that's what is meant with the whole "Altruism = stupid" thing, then sure. Then again, any form of egoism that is more than simply "Do whatever the fuck you feel like doing, but keep in mind that there might be consequences" probably is grasping for straws in the logical argumentation department on most of it's shit too. |

Re: The Worst Combination
Yeah, God debate is like Logic 101.
Sadly, the vast majority of people (on both sides) still fail at it. |

Re: The Worst Combination
I agree with most of your post (I think your view of altruism is slightly skewed). However, I want to address this small snippet. A case could be made about the relationship between Stalin's actions, and atheism. However, I don't think it would hold much water. Stalin, to my knowledge, never conducted any of the purges under the banner of atheism. Rather, it is a testament to dogmatism at it's worst. Stalin's status as an atheist just happens to be circumstantial. I'm paraphrasing this from a favorite author of mine, Dawkins btw.

Re: The Worst Combination
Athiests have never united under one banner in the same way religion has. Because being an athiest isn't the same thing. It's like, by not being a fan of say, basketball, I'm not in the "People who don't like basketball group". If I am, I've not been to any of the meetings. People that group together under the banner of an athiest SUPER SQUAD to fight the EVILS OF RELIGION are bordering on/ if not completely hypocritical.

To be fair, we get persecuted as much/more than Muslims in some parts of your so-called "free nation". So fuck you =)
