Read the shit you post. Mars won't be <35 miles from earth, it will be approximately 34.65 M (which is MILLION) miles from earth.

It wouldn't look like a moon if it was 34.65 miles from Earth, I can tell you that much.

Re: once in a lifetime

^ beat me to it - although I wasn't going to rag on him. I also would like to ask why people keep reporting that it will be as large as the moon. I keep hearing this. I keep laughing.

EDIT: It is still a neat astrological event... if you like that kinda stuff.

Re: once in a lifetime

35 miles!!! LOLOLOL we would be fucking dead if that happened, because mars would get sucked into earths gravity, and destroy the planet. Sound kinda fun

35 million miles is actually really close in astronomical terms. I don't know where people are getting this stupid notion that it will be as large as the moon. LOL, it won't even be appear to be 5% of that size. It will look like a very bright star at best.

35 miles is close to 35 million miles. Not that much of a difference.

yeah kinda reminded me of a retarded 2012 theory that i got in the mail.

Apparently our solar system is placed in an orbit of another wide ass galaxy, where a planet pass by once every 4000 years. and that is what will cause the end of days.

didn't know that earth is less than 4000 years old, lololol.

I actually have a friend who's enough of a dumbshit to miss noticing such a flaw,so i forwarded the mail to him and next thing i knew is that he started praying and quite smoking.

35 miles? You mean Mars will crash on Earth? Isnt that supposed to happen on 2012?

Re: once in a lifetime

Mars: Hey! Earth!
Earth: What?
Mars: Surprise buttsex!
Earth: Oh noes!

35 miles? That shit is just hilarious. The moon itself is roughly 240 thousand miles apart from Earth.

And knowing that a 3 mile object left a 60 mile wide crater on Earth with a blast yield calculated on the 10 million megatons of TNT (for comparison, the nuclear bomb that detonated in Nagasaki, "Fat Man", only had 21 kilotons of TNT of blast yield).

Now knowing that Mars has 2100 miles of radius, imagine the view of Mars in less of 35 miles from Earth.

Breathtaking. Literally.

Read the shit you tell him to read.

Mars was ~34.65M miles from Earth on August 27th, 2003. This doesn't happen "every 200 years," the actual pattern is much more complicated than that. Astronomically, Mars comes "close" to Earth (~55M miles) every time we pass it in orbit. The variations in the two orbits cause us to be significantly closer some years than others.

The 2003 occurrence was notable because that was the closest Mars and Earth have been to each other in 60,000 years. However, they will be about as close in 2018, and even closer in 2237.

The only reason I read more into it is because he provided a link to Snopes, and it seemed odd that Snopes would be covering something like that.
