Re: Poor sand people >':
Good to hear, Nero. Keep it up. But remember, don't settle for anything less that a multiparty system. Remember Iran 1979 - just trading totalitarianism for hyper-Islamic rule isn't enough.

Re: Poor sand people >':
I dislike the two party system in the US. Much like what we have now between the republican and democrats. You end up with parties that are mere polar opposites. Which A)makes it hard to find needed moderation, and where B)people get caught up in antiquated ideologies behind their party instead of focusing on current issues being actually faced.
What we have now with our two parties is, one which is willing to take provocative action but based off close minded ideals. The other is full of good ideas, but lacks the backbone to enact any of them. This is why I am an independent. Because even though I may agree with bits and pieces of either side. Neither side even remotely offers what I consider to be the core values I see to be necessary. As far as checks and balances. Are you talking about when they hold different respective branches? Because there is no real checks or balance between them. They are separate entities, with no authority over each other. It is not always the case that each branch will be controlled by different parties, and even when it is the case its far less a separation of power imo, and simply serves to disseminate meaningful motions into an unneeded adversarial system. Re: Poor sand people >':
^ Yeah, but you either get that system, or totalitarian Islamic state.
It's not about idealism, it's about practicality. |

Re: Poor sand people >':
Oh I agree. Idealism may have conjured the world, but pragmatism built it.
My issue is lack of options. Joining one side or the other comes with the expectation to vote based on your parties national committees decision on any given matter. There is little leeway for any autonomy or original thought. Media and official news outlets give minute recognition only(if that) to say an ancillary group like the Green Party. That system is built to fail anything other then the preconceived norms. Take a hypothetical democratic senator. Who is pro choice, and believes in gay rights ect. But also happens to think that fiscal conservatism is necessary to safe guard the economy and shrink the nations debt. Now some random proposal from the democratic line comes along. The senator truly at the bottom of his/her heart feels is a mistake, and would threaten the countries financial stability. If this increasingly hypothetical senator votes against his own party he/she could be penalized up to and including being barred from running as a democrat during the next term. Two party system > totalitarian Islamic state, yes without a doubt. But a two party system still unfortunately leaves many voices unheard. Last edited by Axiom; 02-05-2011 at 05:26 PM. |

Re: Poor sand people >':
I dislike parties. A democratic society should be able to function just fine with all elected officials acting independent of each other. The voting population would vote for the candidate who reflected their interests, and the concerns of a party would not interfere the the goals of those elected officials.
