I watched two seasons of survivor. First one (I think) where some gay dude won because some old dude had massive amounts of honor. And then one season where some goddamn hero and his buddies were getting allianced picked off, so the goddamn hero just kept winning fucking challenge after challenge so he could never be voted off. He did this all the way till the end where he had to go against some chick in the most bullshit fucking challenge ever. They fucking had to balance on some little mat thing out in the water. And the dude is like fucking 60lbs or some shit heavier than the chick, but has the same sized goddamn little mat. So his was sinking and having water shift all over it while the little mat could support her no problem. It was literally im-fucking-possible for that dude to win. So he lost.

Hardcore injustice. I was pissed for a week straight.

I told him to follow the PEMDAS method (parenthesis-exponent-multiplication-division-addition-subtraction).

So,

48/2(9+3)

You probably skipped everything after this, so you dont know, but this has been discussed already. PEMDAS is not a (universal) rule, its just a a tool taught to kids to help teach them the order of operations. Wikipedia has more on that http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations

To cut things short for you, the conclusion is that the question is poorly written and that both can be a valid answer (we even found some others. hint, how would you read x2 online?)

however I contacted the math department and was explained this (it was my old trig prof too

)

"unless the work clearly states not to, use pemdas when reading or expressing a math problem"-Dr.Jow (Mathematician and Nasa engineer)
^I don't think anyone wants to argue with that the PhD gets the final word

I had one royal bitch of a time explaining that to my ex through her math courses I'm like
"I don't care what you fancy AP teacher told you about it!!! Your college professors and classmates will apply it when reading your work"

The thing with pemdas is it is not a rule, its a way to memorize. There is also bedmas, and in other languages also differently.

I think Dr.Jow just gave you a generic response :P

I did it because I had something I wanted to say about MATH vs sexual desire, and I wanted everyone else to see what I had to say. You know, all 20-something active members. As in, this isn't a big deal.

Could of made a new thread, but that would have required a bit more work (maybe not, thanks to you), and there's not much of a difference between making a new thread (linking Numi's quote in it) and posting in an old one.

The only way I can see this as being any sort of objective problem I should feel bad about would be if necro-ing dead threads fucks up this forum technically, somehow.

Edit: Shit, even if no one saw what I had to say, there's a certain difference between thinking it or writing it to myself vs. writing it on a forum, a place where people are supposed to see it. Just putting it in a place like that gives me an certain kind of satisfaction, at the very least.
