While it in no way justifies the horrible writing of the Child of Destiny shit, Kishi didn't completely shit the bed with this one. Neji chose to give up his life, rather than having that forced on him as his "destiny" as a lower branch member. He's essentially doing as his father did: subverting the destiny of the lower branch by doing as he chose rather than what was asked of him. Neji's development hasn't been shot to hell just because Naruto's went to shit.
