Re: What book are you currently reading?

Currently reading "Ack-Ack Macaque." It's about an eye-patch-wearing, cigar-chomping macaque that flies a Spitfire during World War II and he fights Nazi ninjas. Oh, and there's some conspiracy crap about a cult and a prince or whatever. But I'm reading it for the monkey.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Recently bought several books I'll be reading over the next few weeks:

Mortality (Christopher Hitchens)
Every Day is an Athiest Holiday (Penn Jillette)
Tenth of December (George Saunders)
Building Stories (Chris Ware)
Free Will (Sam Harris)
The Life of Objects (Susana Moore)
House of Earth (Woody Guthrie)
My Brother's Book (Maurice Sendak)

I had been planning to buy Sam Harris's "Free Will" for a little while, but I made a conscious effort to go buy it today after watching this talk given by him.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

I'm reading the third book in the Monstrumologist series by Rick Yancey, called Isle of Blood. The title makes it sound like a lame kiddie series, but the books are incredible. The last two books get extremely poetical and philosophical, and they're just beautifully written. That guy has a great writing style. Plus it has a tasteful amount of written gore, though every bit of it serves a purpose and isn't just "there" for the sake of making it bloody.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

I highly recommend "The Tenth of December" to everyone. A collection of short stories by George Saunders; unique style, very easy read, highly entertaining and sometimes thought provoking. I've one short story left, but so far "My Chivalric Fiasco" is probably my favourite, or "Escape from Spiderhead."

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Been a while.

Waiting for the final book in the Riftwar Cycle, Magicians End to be published in may, after finishing A Kingdom Besieged and Crown Imperiled. Feist isn't trying any more. They're pretty terrible. I suspect someone else is writing them now.

Read Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson. Fun, but lacking a bit of... something. You just sort of got a handle on it and it ended, and not sure I see a series in it.

Book two of The Malazan Book of the Fallen: The Deadhouse Gates. Pretty good, still WTF but getting a little more on the history and background to this state. Library seems to have lost all their copies of Book 3, so dunno what I'll do.

A Memory of Light, otherwise known as the fourteenth and final book of the impressive Wheel of Time series. It was good, but not great. I expected more out of the Last Battle. But, as Sanderson wrote for Jordon, "...it was an ending."

Began the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. Read book one, Lord Foul's Bane. It's... not what I expected. Put it this way, when the main character is a bitter, angry leper who is teleported into a fantasy land that begins to rejuvenate his body and he's surly to everyone, even rapes the girl who befriends him (and gets away with it because they think him their saviour)... you're in for something different. A fresh take on the portal fantasy where usually the characters are completely cool with the fantastic world they have no idea about but just roll with it rather than freaking out.

Now reading Anathem by Neil Stephenson. But only 20 pages in so no comment yet.

Re: What book are you currently reading?

Finished "Lullaby" by Chuck Palahniuk. It was good, but I didn't love it until the final chapters. The ending made it worthwhile.

Halfway through "Post Office" by Bukowski now. One of my favorite writers, I would absolutely recommend this and any of his other novels or poetry collections.
