He was already an ANBU member, I think that he can come back and be a member whenever he wants, he is already probably the best jounin in the village. Regarding how to become an ANBU member I think that you just have to be an above average ninja with exceptional talent and abilities.
I mean there are lots of possibilities, I think Shino can be very soon, Chouji as well as Shika if he can become a more powerful ninja. Of course Neji and Lee with time, I think it is a given regarding Gaara and his old team. Just for the record this is all in a few more missions but in time they could be.

Actually, I truthfully think Gai is equal to, if not a "better" ninja than Kakashi. Remember when Gai held his own against Itachi, where as Kakashi could not? That's only one instance, but nonetheless. A ninja is defined by how he handles situations, and Kakashi has a history for locking up against powerful opponents. (He got choked up when talking to Orochimaru during the Chuunin Exam, and he got scared when facing Itachi.)

Also, other than Gai. Remember that "Sennin" is just a title. Tsunade and Jiraiya are still Jounins. And I believe they are better ninja's than Kakashi.

Technically he didn't hold his own against him since they never fought just a staring competition. Still the only reason Gai "held his own" is because he has fought Kakashi so many times that he had to learn to fight against the sharingan some way. On the other hand Kakashi hasn't fought anyone else with a sharingan until then so he didn't know how to approach the fight. He didn't necessarily freeze up he just realized he was in a lose lose situation with Oro, he did come up with the plan of using chidori against Oro. Besides what defines someone locking up Oro didn't take Sasuke right then and there, we can argue many reasons why. Perhaps he didn't want to fight with Kakashi because it would bring more ninjas for a fight he wasn't ready to have at that time, or the VERY long shot he was scared of Kakashi. Regarding his fight with Itachi he did get caught with his pants down in there fight because of the sharingan but you won't always make the right decision in a brand new situation. I don't think Kakashi had ever seen or heard of that sharingan before that time, but after that he went back to the drawing board to try and prepare for the next fight.

well if he didnt, his fighting style wouldve changed, he is still a genius and he'll have different moves and all, but died? no but kakashi will be a whole new person.

I am just saying, in general. I knew you were going to reply with the, "Gai has fought Kakashi's sharingan so many times," thing. I agree. But Kakashi as a jounin, SHOULD HAVE been better prepared than that. He knew he was facing a powerful sharingan user, and he could've compiled a better plan.

Who would have died a long time ago, Kakashi wasn't a bad ninja by any means before he got his sharingan, he was just like any other jounin. In fact Kakashi shared a little with Sasuke and Naruto in his early days cocky likc Sasuke and ready for action like Naruto.
Your right, your right he knew he was facing a very powerful sharingan user, but he didn't know what kind of power he possesed until it was to late. I don't think he knew of any other way to fight Itachi, he was already faster than Kakashi. He basically put his life on the line to save the other two people, he didn't think Asuma and Kurenai could handle them without his help. Kisame had retreated back to where Itachi was so it would either be two on one (Kisame versus Asuma and Kurenai) or one three (Itachi versus everyone). Out of all the possible outcomes Kakashi did the best one, Itachi was way beyond Kurenai's level of genjutsu and he could easily predict Asuma's moves. If Kakashi wasn't close to either of them then it was a very good chance that they would have been killed, so he kept them by his side.

In that fight Gai was a better opponent for Itachi than Kakashi, for the simple fact he told them how to fight against Itachi. If one of them got killed because of Kakashi not telling them to do something in the fight then I think he would have been devastated. Gai at least gave them a fighting chance by saying look at his feet to fight him.

yea i agree with her, i mean kakashi told them to shut their eyes which can protect against shirangin but like the are the akatuski they got way more than just the shirangin.

Shutting your eyes isn't THAT great of advice. Can then they only have two of their five senses to fight Itachi and Kisame. (Smell and Hear) Atleast looking at his feet give you 4 senses.

ANBU is more of a branch and is no longer as linear as genin-chunin-jounin. . i think jounin=anbu=special police. ANBU, They specialise in only killing. Jounin's, aside by being strong, require social skills in order to teach, inspire and lead. Special police, like sasuke's father, need to be as strong to kick deliquent ass

while i'm at it, sannin=hokage in terms of strength, its just that the sannin dont have executive powers

sannin is not a class like hokage, its just the name those 3 ninjas had, its like how they call garaa, garaa of the desert, but yes the sannin are prolly around hokage lvl

what is this with who is strong and who is weak opinions. the very first impression i had with the series is that everyone has their capabilities and weakpoints. there are things gai can do that kakashi cannot do and vise versa, isnt it the third hokage's concept of team building and team work. this is not dragon ball you know :P
