Now, about the expressions:

"Kumusta" or "Hi, kumusta?" will suffice.
And nobody ever really says "Paalam" anymore, stick with "Babay".
And then I'd suggest you use "Magandang Araw" if you don't want to keep minding if you should say "Magandang Umaga" or "Magandang Tangahali" or Magandang Hapon". Stick with "Magandang Gabi", though.
And "Maligayang Pagdating" is overkill. Use "Welcome" or just say, "Uy, kain!*smile*".

Now I said we'd go situational, so let's go with number one:
Meet and Greet.
"Hi" will suffice if you are introduced to someone in your age-range.
"Hello po" if you are introduced to someone older/ an elder. (Important: Do you know what the particle "po" is for?)
"Hindi pa (po) ako marunong mag-tagalog, eh. Turuan mo/(n'yo po) ako?" means "I can't speak tagalog, yet. Will you teach me?" if you get too overloaded with sentences you can't understand. But I doubt that'll happen to you seeing as how the unwritten code of Filipino Hospitality dictates that making a guest feel uncomfy is taboo, so they'll probably just go out of their way and speak to you in English anyways.

Actually, you don't really have to learn the language since Filipinos are naturally bilingual or tri-lingual lol. You'll understand each other more or less.

But if you really wanna learn it, say"Gusto ko (po) matutong magtagalog. Turuan mo/(nyo po) ako?" means "I wanna learn the language." That's bound to endear you to them lol. We're suckers for strangers who wanna learn the language. Actually I myself was pretty wowed when two Mormon missionaries knocked on our door and started talking in tagalog lol. I thought they were pulling a prank on me.

If you didn't understand any of them, ask. Then if you can think up of more phrases or vocabs that you may need in a such situation, ask.

*Italicized syllables are the stressed/accented syllables.

Cultural note:
IMPORTANT: If you don't know what the particle "po" is used for, or what "Mano" is, ASK. Very important.
