Life or Death: Husband or Parents

The Debate================================== ====

There was recently a story about a woman who suffered from paralysis and then, well, complications occcured and she became a vegetable, only "living" with her heart pumping.

Her husband wants to cut off the life circulation to "end his wife's suffering", BUT

Her parents want to keep her alive.

The Husband's Opinion===============================

He's paying for her life support, he can choose to not pay it and take it away.

The Parents' Opinion================================

It is their daughter, they should have a say over her life.

She still has a chance of recovery.

======================================== ======

Who is right?

I know this is going to sound a bit, er, off colored... But the husband has all the say over the wife. When married, there is quite a bit of legal mumbo jumbo that sort of constitutes ownership. Additionally, the wife vegetable is over 18, yeah? That means the parents have aboslutely no say in what happens to her, seeing as how she is considered an autonomous adult in the eyes of the law. Her guardian, if anyone, would be her husband.

And to be honest, whether or not the plug should be pulled should be up to the doctors... And the state, seeing as how most do not allow this kind of thing to happen.

Do you have a link for this article or whatever?

No, I don't have the link, but so far, the husband's winning (they had a law suit), but the parents appealed to the Supreme Court.

I also do think that you're right, that the husband has the right (that's probably why he won).

She's over 18. But if the parents were paying it, on the other hand, then who has the say?

basically DarkAztez has put down my view on this. The husband should be the one deciding.

Although the wife is paralyzed, there's no indication that she's really suffering in pain. She's just paralyzed, so killing her won't really be neccessary. I think they should keep the wife alive and not kill her yet, until something really bad has happened. Right now, most of everything is still unknown. She might even wake up, no one knows. As long as their's a chance, then I think that they should keep her alive. I also think that the husband should also consider the situation more carefully. Is she really suffering or is he? Just because he can't bear the pain, that doesn't mean that he should just end her life.
