A reflex?

An off-duty cop is in an apartment when he hears "No, John, don't shoot!", then a gunshot. He goes into the next room to find a woman dead on the floor, a gun beside her. Nearby are a doctor, a cop, and a mailman. He immediately arrests the mailman for murder. How does he know for sure that it's the mailman? (No, it's not because mailmen are crazy or something like that)
