A transcript of the video, which is nearly 30 minutes long, was obtained by ABC News.

"I invite you to embrace Islam," bin Laden says, according to the transcript posted on ABC's website.

"It will also achieve your desire to stop the war as a consequence, because as soon as the warmongering owners of the major corporations realize that you have lost confidence in your democratic system and have begun to look for an alternative, and this alternative is Islam, they will run after you to please you and achieve what you want to steer you away from Islam."

The video, which appears to have been created as recently as this summer, does not make any explicit threats against the United States.

The tape appears to have been created recently. In the video bin Laden refers to recent events, such as the French election in May that saw Nicolas Sarkozy become president, and the anniversary in August of the Hiroshima bombing.

According to the transcript, bin Laden also calls on Americans to heed statements from U.S. soldiers in Iraq made in an interview with a British journalist.

"It would benefit you to listen to the poignant messages of your soldiers in Iraq, who are paying -- with their blood, nerves and scattered limbs -- the price for these sorts of irresponsible statements," the transcript says.

"Among them is the eloquent message of Joshua which he sent by way of the media, in which he wipes the tears from his eyes and describes American politicians in harsh terms and invites them to join him there for a few days."

These references may bolster the video's authenticity, which intelligence officials are still trying to validate.

While bin Laden doesn't make any direct threats of violence against the U.S. in the tape, he does suggest violence is still on the agenda.

He says there are two ways to end the conflict in Iraq.

"The first is from our side, and it is to continue to escalate the killing and fighting against you," he warns.

The second solution, he suggests, is to put an end to the democratic system of government.

"It has now become clear to you and the entire world the impotence of the democratic system and how it plays with the interests of the peoples and their blood by sacrificing soldiers and populations to achieve the interests of the major corporations," the transcript states.

The video, which the U.S. government recently obtained, is released to coincide with the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Al Jazeera, the Arab satellite TV news network, said the video is likely to be shown in the next 72 hours.

Al Qaeda's media arm announced the video through a banner ad on an Islamist website. The ad included a still photo of bin Laden, who hasn't appeared in new video footage since October 2004, the eve of U.S. presidential election.

In the image, bin Laden has a fully black beard. Past images showed his beard to be grey with dark streaks.

"It does look oddly like he is wearing a false beard," former U.S. counterterrorism official Richard Clarke told ABC News.

"If we go back to the tape three years ago, he had a very white beard. This looks like a phony beard that has been pasted on."

Clues to his whereabouts

This could provide a significant clue as to where bin Laden is hiding, he said.

"One place where a beard would stand out would be southeast Asia, the Philippines, Indonesia," Clarke said. "No one's thought he was there, but that is an environment where most men, Muslim men don't have beards."

However, terrorism expert Eric Margolis told CTV Newsnet that it's not unusual for older Muslim men to dye their beards.

Bin Laden, 50, is believed to be hiding in the tribal areas of northwest Pakistan not far from the border with Afghanistan. U.S. security reports have said al Qaeda essentially has a safe haven in those areas.

Besides not appearing in videos, bin Laden hasn't issued an audio message since July 2006, when he vowed that al Qaeda would fight the U.S. all over the globe.

Ayman al-Zawahri, al Qaeda's second in command, has been a more prolific spokesman for the global terror group.

Last year, a leaked French intelligence report claimed that Saudi intelligence thought bin Laden had died of typhoid in Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia called that mere speculation.

The Saudi-born bin Laden is believed to have a serious kidney ailment. Some analysts think that's why he hasn't been seen.

"My guess is if he's sick with anything, it's probably hepatitis," said Margolis, adding parasites are another major medical problem in that part of the world.

Some also speculate bin Laden could be too tightly pinned down to have had a tape smuggled out. Others say bin Laden may have intentionally limited his appearances to maximize his impact when he does issue a statement.

A U.S. intelligence report issued earlier this summer claimed that al Qaeda has largely rebuilt its operational capacity that was disrupted after 9/11.

The U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security said Friday that at this time, it doesn't have any information about a specific, credible threat of an attack on the United States.

There have been Islamist-related terror incidents in Europe this summer.

Car bombs were found in London and an explosives-laden SUV driven into the Glasgow airport in late June.

This past week, police in Denmark and Germany claim to have broken up terror plots involving Muslim groups. In both cases, the groups are suspected of having links with al Qaeda.

Speaking in Sydney, Australia, U.S. President George Bush urged his country's allies to keep up the fight against terrorism.

"Pressure keeps the terrorists on the run, and when on the run, we're safer," he said.
