Re: Japan fanclub.^_^
As for another lesson, here you go!
DAYS OF THE WEEK, MONTHS, AND DAYS OF THE MONTH This is a pretty big lesson - it should keep you busy for another week! I advise not to try it all at once A. Days of the Week *yoobi - "day" getsuyoobi - "Monday", literally translates to "day of the moon" kayoobi - "Tuesday", literally translates to "day of fire" suiyoobi - "Wednesday", literally translates to "day of water" mokuyoobi - "Thursday", literally translates to "day of wood" kinyoobi - "Friday", literally translates to "day of gold" (TGIK! 8D) doyoobi - "Saturday", literally translates to "day of earth" nichiyoobi - "Sunday", literally translates to "day of the Sun" (rather ironic, IMO) * keep in mind that the "oo" sound actually sounds like "ou". When there are two vowels in a Japanese word, it makes the same sound, but just extended. Usually, if it's a double vowel kind of thing, it wouldn't be in romanization, but since I don't have that kind of key and am used to writing two of the same vowel...umm, yeah. Also, when writing Hiragana, the "oo" is indeed written with an O, and then a U. Same with the "ee" sound; instead of writing two E's, it's and E and an I. So that's just a note that might be wrong, I don't know, I think I got most of it in. All in all, just keep in mind - "oo" does not make an "u" sound! (ex. tooth is a no-no) __________________ B. Months Hopefully, you've got your numbers in memory. If not, you might want to go back and remember them again; it helps - like, really really helps - to know your numbers. gatsu - "month", I think. I'm pretty sure. ichigatsu - "January", literally translates to "first month" nigatsu - "February", literally translates to "second month" sangatsu - "March", literally translates to "third month" *shigatsu - "April", literally translates to "fourth month" gogatsu - "May", literally translates to "fifth month" rokugatsu - "June", literally translates to "sixth month" shichigatsu - "July", literally translates to "seventh month" hachigatsu - "August", literally translates to "eighth month" kugatsu - "September", literally translates to "ninth month" juugatsu - "October", literally translates to "tenth month" juuichigatsu - "November", literally translates to "eleventh month" juunigatsu - "December", literally translates to "twelfth month" * note the irregular; it is indeed supposed to be shi. Also, keep in mind that these aren't the actual, well, names for the months of the year. They just translate to "first month", "eleventh month", etc. According to Mrs. M, there are other names for the months of the year. __________________ C. Days of the Week Unfortunately for us, the first ten days are irregular, meaning they're totally random. I had a really hard time learning these, but soon enough, I got them. I'll start with the first ten days. tsuitachi - 1 *futsuka - 2 mikka - 3 (remember what's special about these double consonants...) yokka - 4 *itsuka - 5 muika - 6 nanoka - 7 yooka - 8 kokonoka - 9 (My favorite! <3) tooka - 10 * you can't really hear the "U" in these. So really, the just sound like "futska" or "itska") Then the rest of the numbers would continue off at 11 (juuichi) and you just add "nichi". Here are a couple of examples, and I'd just like to point out three irregulars. Examples - juuhachinichi (18), nijuusannichi (23), sanjuuichinichi (31) Irregulars - juuyokka (14), hatsuka (20) *for pronunciation see above star*, nijuuyokka (24) Thus ending my lesson. If you have any questions feel free to PM me/post. SL, out. *Phew!* |

Re: Japan fanclub.^_^
Nine is kyuu, but, as an irregular, it's ku. This happens in most time instances, as far as I know. As for a reason, I'll try to get a good one tomorrow, but I don't know. And the reason why shi translates to yon is because 4 is an unlucky number in Japan.
Why? First, answer why 13 is an unlucky number here. Yeah, that's what I thought. Quote:
The date today, where I am, would be this: (Weekday) getsuyoobi, (Month) juuichigatsu, (Day of Month) juukunichi. |

And by the way, just so everyone knows, anybody is welcome to make an FC sig for show or public use. If you've made FC sigs, feel free to post them and we can add them to the Sig List (when we get one, hehe). |

Re: Japan fanclub.^_^
Thanks for the new lessons Sharingon Lord.=] Okay, well it seems that the become a regular FC is the winner, because almost everyone else in this fc that hasn't voted, isn't ususally on, and also, it just seems like the best idea. But just in case, I'll leave the thing on for the other users for 3 or 4 more days.

Re: Japan fanclub.^_^
Thank you.
I still don't get most of it, but I'm getting there. ![]() Quote:
2. Nope. 3. Watashi no namae wa SL desu. 4. Oyasumi-nasai. 5. Gozaimasu. 6. Ummm, if you take out the 'Watashi wa', you have Tanaka Keiko desu, which is okay as long as Keiko is saying it. But it could also be Tanaka, so it's just 'Watashi wa Keiko desu'. 7. Goodbye. 8. When you meet someone for the first time. 9. Um, first names? (Guess.) 10. Question. (the ka is there!) Ooh, I learned lotsa new things! Thanks OTC! |
