it's an old age debate on how human beings get their intelligence. does it automatically come with the package of being born (genes)...

or does it come through experience (environment X influence)...


well, I'm in the nurture(environment) side! without the experience, there will be no knowledge, even if it is already a part of a human being when he/she's born! through experience, everything will be learned! ^^

I think there are a few things that humans get as soon as they are born, things such as instincts but all other knowledge has to be learned through their life... bears on the other hand i read are born with the knowledge o.O but were not talkign about bears so back to humans

even if i have to choose, i still choose nurture, instead of nature..i rather learn to be hardworking, than be too arrogant(i think i will be like that) about the natural talent you have..nurture takes courage..

when we are born we say things like "ndgiaogn gaweg boooosga; blagideebop (oh i like that word now O_O'' ) and we stick our fingers in our mouth and drool and then laugh about it then prolly take a dump in our pants O_O thats not so smart now is it? but as we grow older we learn things. how to say "STFU" "fishie"and so on. so i think nurture. but we may get skills such as learning faster like your mom and/or dad.

i'd say both. we had already this argument in our psychology class. say for example, a piano artist already has a born talent in piano and it just happened that he grew in an environment of musicians or he saw a piano and discovered he has a talent to do so. if he grew on an environment entirely different (like in the streets and never saw a piano his whole life) then he couldn't have manifested that talent. on the other hand, if you don't have the born talent no matter how we try we'll not learn how to play piano.

dang..this is a very easy debate already.

yeah. i wueite agree with all of you guys! we are already born with potential skills and abilities, the only thing to have it confirmed is through experience.

i also have an example about a caveman. if a caveman stays inside his cave for all his life, his mind will be limited only to the things surrounding him. how the heck will he know that he's living in a dark place? how will he know that this is color blue and blah blah... he gets to learn all of those once he goes out of the cave and be expose to his surrounding. ahihihi...

unless there's a nature fella here, we won't hav any debate coming. lol

Let me tell you guys a little story. This thread reminds me alot of it.

When I was born, I had a seizure, and I wasn't crying when I was born. I was taken to a big hospital, and I had gotten alot of different diseases. Most of them were affecting my brain, and my nervous system. Found out I had gotten brain damage on the right side of my brain. The doctors had told my mom and my dad that I was going to live my life as a vegetable. But after strong prayer from my brother's church, I was healed. *snaps finger* just like that. The doctors don't know how, but I was healed.

And what was even more amazing, is that when I was supposed to be a vegetable, I can believe that I'm somewhat blessed with a crazy imagination, and a strong hunger to learn. I was deemed smarter or "above average"; and I could think incredibly fast.... When the doctors said I was supposed to be a vegetable, with hardly any thought in my brain at all.

I was born a sick baby with brain damage; and to live my life as a vegetable. But now I'm capable of doing things like any other kid... and even smarter than some.

I believe that every person is born as a new person, not knowing anything in the world. But as they open their eyes for the first time, they discover new things. They see colors, see words, see many different things and learn from it as a baby.
So I don't believe that babies are born with knowledge. You obtain it by discovering things the second they see new things.
It's true, that babies can obtain their parents will and thirst for knowledge, and even be good in the same subjects such as math or literature... But they aren't born with that knowledge itself.
