"Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

Maybe this has been said before, maybe not. Itachi's role in this manga exemplifies what a tragic hero truly is. He fits all of the characteristics of a tragic hero.
A tragic hero must possess specific characteristics, five of which are below:
1.Nobility (of a noble birth) or wisdom (by virtue of birth).
2.Hamartia (translated as flaw or error in judgment). Either a mistake in the character's actions or in his personality that leads to a downfall.
3.A reversal of fortune brought about because of the hero's Hamartia.
4.The discovery or recognition that the reversal was brought about by the hero's own actions (anagnorisis)
5.The audience must feel dramatic irony for the character

Itachi even knowing what he did to his clan or so we assume, was still everyones favorite character.

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

I think sasuke is rather the tragic hero. All those 5 points correspond to him too.

1. born in same noble clan
2. his flaw was the village and friends betrayal, and sinking in hate
3. reversal of fortune coz he lost Oro's powers and probably CS.
4. he'll probably recognize the flaws after this fight.
5. it's ironic how he won by not being stronger but by outlasting. His opinion on winning through hate betrayed him.

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

lol... see the whole thing about a tragic hero... is that he or she has to be a hero in the first place. o.o

And no, I've never liked Itachi much.
He is sexy though.

If the elephants have past lives yet are destined to always remember
It's no wonder how they scream
Like you and I they must have some temper

And I am dreaming of them on the plains
Dirtying up their beds
Watching for some sign of rain to cool their hot heads

And how dare that you send me that card when I'm doing all that I can do
You are forcing me to remember when all I want is to just forget you

If the tiger shall protect her young then tell me how did you slip by
All my instincts have failed me for once
I must have somehow slept the whole night

And I am dreaming of them with their kill
Tearing it all apart
Blood dripping from their lips and teeth sinking into heart

And how dare that you say you'll call
When you know I need some peace of mind
If you have to take sides with the animals
Won't you do it with one who is kind

And if the hawks in the trees need the dead
If you're living you don't stand a chance
For a time though you share the same bed
There are only two ends to this dance

You can flee with your wounds just in time or lie there as he feeds
Watching yourself ripped to shreds and laughing as you bleed

So for those of you falling in love keep it kind
Keep it good
Keep it right
Throw yourself in the midst of danger but keep one eye open at night

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

The words Itachi and hero should never be in the same sentence. Seriously. Itachi is no kind of hero, and he got what he had coming to him: death.

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

Itachi is no tragic hero. He is a mass murderer. He killed his parents and ruined the life of his brother.
Unless there is something we don't know.

He is still my favorite character though =)

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

Itachi by his own admission killed his clan with Madara's help of course. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. It maybe that Madara forced him to do so. Or it maybe that since he is not that powerful to stop Madara he has to go along with his plans and make Sasuke hate him so much so Sasuke will be more powerful than him and so Sasuke can defeat Madara.

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

like many other story lines in naruto we can not assume that he killed everyone in his clan. im sure kishi will tell the story behind that...until he does im going to hold out on that argument...

I agree Itachi isnt everyones favorite character but he is the character most fans wanted to see...

There are other characteristics of a tragic hero...maybe i should go into more detail...

What are we assuming? Didn't Itachi state that Madara was present/helped somehow during Itachi's slaughtering of the clan?

Re: "Itachi a Tragic Hero in his own right"

well he did say he was present...however i would like to see a flashback to prove that...so many times we only here one half of what is the truth...like thinking itachi slaughtered his clan all by himself until recently...

It's been stated, so it that is how it is. We don't need a flashback to show us what's already been stated.

He's not no damn Hero. Name ONE thing he done that was very Heroic?

Turning your little brother into a hatred freak? That being hero?

The guy will never be my favorite Character... (He's very cheesy) sorry Itachi Fans.. But he is.. Come on... Sharingan is always on.. he should of listen to Kisame about those eyes being detrimental.

Okay in part 1.. He killed the whole Uchiha clan.. (I believed this was bullshit all along since some guy awakened MS by killing his best and then is granted jutsus and use them against his own clan.) No. Those jutsus take experience to learn.. Itachi wasn't THE most powerful ninja in the Uchiha clan. He just awoken the forbidden Sharingan and slaughtered his clan with the help of Uchiha Madara (We didn't found that out til now.)

The only thing he ever done was pushing Sasuke to rip him to shreds. Thats all.
