Hmm, the best teamates as I see it would be, sasuke, naruto, and neji. If that's to say he's leading a 3 man squad.

Sasuke; because of his sharingan and good will, he'd be a great teamate to shikamaru and a valuable companian to have on any team.

Naruto; because of his strength and will, and abilty to condense chakra at amazing levels and speed, not to meantion his shadow clone would come in handy in most cases, its needles to say that he would be a good member.

And finally Neji; because of his beakugan. He'd be a key part of the team. Using the bakugan he could scope out the terain and use his acuracy to eliminate enimies quickly. He'd come in handy.

And personally I believe that all these members would work together quite well and be an amazing team.

The question was posed about Shikamaru's team, though Neji, Sasuke, and Naruto would be an awesome team, its also impractical. All teams have at least one female nin.

Ok, I’ve canceled my first choice.

New Shikamaru team ;

Shikamaru, Neji, Lee, Naruto & Sakura.

Need Sakura coz:
i) ability to heal wounds
ii) her superhuman strength
Ninja team relies on its medical ninja to survive.

Yeah they're shinobi, who practice the art of illusion and deception, they won't have teams more than 3 - 4 at a time usually for the safety purposes.
