Best Laptop for around $1000
My parents wanna get me a laptop for christmas and are willing to spend at most $1000 on it. But realistically if I find a really nice one for like $1200-$1300, they shouldn't mind spending the extra couple hundred. Now I was initially wanting an Apple, but from what I hear they suck. So please give me your advice.

Don't buy Sony. Those things have been exploding left and right recently. I'd totally reccomend them if Sony would sort the problem out.

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
Dell Laditude E-series laptops are great. Most employees I support at work have one. There is even one with a 18 hour or so battery option.

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
Apple is good, but it and Sony are both overpriced.
Get a Dell XPS M1530. Starts at $1,099, plus these recommendations: 1) Screw Microsoft Office. Get Open Office and save yourself $160. 2) Don't spend more on a higher res screen. 1200x800 is perfect for a 15" display. 3) The $470 for a Solid State Drive is not worth it. 4) If you plan on gaming, get the 256MB 8600M (+$100). If not, the 8400M is fine. 5) I have a second battery for my Dell and I love it. (+$40 to $90) 6) Don't get any anti-virus stuff from Dell. If you want something good, get NOD32, if you want something free, get AVG Free. |

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
Usually, I just reinstall Windows when I get a new labbie. You dunno what kind of crap they put on there. I am a bit lazy. I just Ghost image the HDD with an image with all my programs, updates and such. Saves hours of reconfiguring, and you got a custom build you can just reset your machine to.
Seriously though, Dell has the best service and equipment IMO. Skip vostoro and inspiron crap, and go with the ladittude or XPS. I acutally think XPS is a waste. If I am getting a labbie, its not for game. Its gonna be pro-grade reliable and fast. Gaming stays with the beast of a desktop at home. EDIT: Wait a bit. The new Intel Nehalem chipset is coming to laptops soon. The desktop baseline processor (Core i7 920 $300) is as fast as the last gen quad-core (QX9770 $1000+) Extreme processor. I dunno how the mobile chipsets will do, but they are going to pwn the shit out of anything you get right now. Dell just dropped in Core i7 Nehalem into their XPS desktops. Wait a month or two for the new mobile chipsets to come to the XPS and Ladditude lines. Last edited by Freshgrease; 11-24-2008 at 01:06 AM. |

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
I've got my eyes set on this real nice HP, so in your opinions how does HP generally compare to dell?
also what is the main difference between these two laptops?, because right now the cheaper one has a couple free memory updates. So besides memory, what's the difference? Is there a difference in the touch screen capability? http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...tx2500z_series http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...me=tx2z_series

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
HP has a lot more bloat than Dell, but HP as a company is more likely to survive a depression, if one ever hits, so keep that in mind if warranty support is important to you.
The laptops you linked to only offer AMD CPUs, I personally prefer Intel, but AMD still gets the job done. They also use ATI graphics, which I hate (nVidia or bust as far as I'm concerned) but again, they get the job done. The 12" screens are too small, in my opinion, and most bags are designed 15" anyway so a larger one should be just as easy to carry. I still prefer Dell, and I was speaking from a casual-gaming stand-point, so if you're not a gamer then take FG's advice with the business lappy, but either way, we both still recommend Dell. |

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
Edit: @ wecaoniddmabb789 WTF is up with you linking miscellaneous shoe sites?
Anytime I am looking into buying any kind of computer stuff or just curious about reviews of products, I just hit up CNet. Here is the link to reviews of laptops around the $900-$1000 range. http://reviews.cnet.com/laptop-revie...rColumnArea1.0 I like toshiba's, I used a satelite in college, but its was mainly for research and typing papers. Oh and Apples do not suck [only the new laptop they brought out to compete in the Dell market], they are insane machines for multimedia, I worked on G5s at my previous job @ an ad agency... Heck if I can truly afford one I would so get one. And at my job before that I was using a PC with just as much power and just as much monitors as that G5, but nearly 1/2 the price. It's mainly comes down to how much you want to spend and your preference in the brand. Plus now and days with all the extra goodies/bundle crap, which you mainly don't need you can save some change, ie. if you already have the software from previously owned computers; get a student version of software as with the HP Dell thing, Dell clearly has way more exposure than HP has ever had. Dell pretty much has the business sector on lock down. But what's coming down to now is just how cheap you can get a Dell or HP... its how "cool" they look, so HP might be coming up. ...doesn't Dell own Alien Ware? I usually don't bother with CNet for laptops. Just find a good brand (Dell, HP, etc.) that'll allow you to customize the components. Last edited by Mal; 12-10-2008 at 08:40 PM. |

Re: Best Laptop for around $1000
For me, best brand is Toshiba or Dell...HP not too good (in term of toughness)..
