When someone is angry, in the situation, they can see how nasty they're being, you can point it out. Sure, it might lead to screaming, but not everything can be solved with bunny slippers and marshmallows. Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself.

No, it wouldn't. The consequence of his behavior needs to be administered immediately after the behavior for the consequence to have any effect. When people stop showing signs of anger, they are in a "just below boiling point" range of emotions and making the comment then would've exacerbated the situation again.

As a child of a broken home, I can tell you it would have ended up the same way. My parents fought all the time when I was growing up. When my mom would try to talk to my dad after a fight, they would start yelling again.

bunny slippers and marshmellows lol, how is waiting for the person to calm down or calming them down before bringing up a problem you have with them that. it makes the most sense, you dont deal with people when they are heated, drunk, anything under those lines.

they teach you in psych class to confront people about a problem in the heat of the moment, for the same reason you dont deal with an intoxicated person you dont deal with a heated person. it makes sense to wait for or make them calm first.

i would have on the spot told him i need to talk to him in private, brought him to another room and explained my point after calming him down a bit, i would have then explained to my mother what happend prior to her walking in

they dont magically calm down, but taking some deep breaths and trying to relax will bring them down from heated to a more calm and approachable level. the longest you wait is until morning if you dont want to deal with it then, i would deal with it then but bring them in private and talk about it. not call them out on it infront of their wife. good you show your backbone, im sure i dont have a back bone because of the way i handle that situation

its going to piss you off no matter how its done, as you can see by the results of what happened. telling someone already pissed you dont like the way there acting or trying to atleast isolate them and calm them first, i will do it my way.

for the ones who arent it wont work and your result will be simliar to what will happen with your approach, for the ones who are wired like that they could be rational and listen to your problem and try and deal with it.
